"Gamers with Jobs" Talks to Paul Stephanouk

“Gamers with Jobs” has posted an initial E3 2005 Compiled Coverage article, including an enthusiastic review of Paul Stephanouk's Rise of Legends presentation. Elysium from Gamers with jobs says:
In response to my first question wondering about the change of direction , he responded that ‘change of direction’ implied the wrong idea. The direction from a gameplay standpoint is fundamentally preserved and only improved where it makes sense and adds to the gameplay. If it ain’t broke, they didn’t fix it.
Thanks to Rohag for the headsup!

New Articles on Rise of Legends

New gamespy article reveals ROL will have a hero system similar to
WarIII, and the conquer the world campaign will have a storyline
attached. It also talks about the different types of districts. It also appears that the district system will replace the concept of "ageing up". A new gameplay factor are dominances which provide certain bonuses throughout the game. You can check that out from this link.

Gamespot also has a new article isn't as comprehensive. Each race will have two unique lines of research. Districts will be more expensive the more you build unless they are attached to a new city. Formations and hero abilities will be present. You can find that link.

Thanks for Alex Moore for the headsup.

BHG E3 Postcards

As Graham "Thunder" Somers promised on our forums, he has posted some "postcard" photos from E3 on their Big Huge Games website. You can see the latest pictures from the event here.

BHG Army Gallery

Just perusing the BHG site for new RoL info, but I noticed a few changes that may not be obvious. As some may recall BHG release a bunch of these 3d rotating renders for Rise of Nations Thrones & Patriots that look like a diorama display featuring a battle scene in various histoircal settings. Looks like since the initial release they have added more of these 3d renders. These appear in the features Army Gallery which you can find here. Each also has an associated screenshot and downloadable wallpaper.

Rise of Legends @ Gamespot

Gamespot has a E3 2005 Pre-show First Look at Rise of Legends:
Rise of Legends will feature a turn-based strategy component that's similar to the conquer the world mode featured in Rise of Nations. However, the global map in Rise of Legends looks much less like a board game and more like a beautiful photograph of the world taken from orbit. In the turn-based mode, you'll be able to move your armies around the map, and then you can resolve the possession of territories in real-time strategy mode. And when armies clash, it can be a pretty impressive sight. We saw a huge battle between the Vinci and the Alim. On the Vinci's side were a range of units, from floating airships and helicopters to huge, lumbering land leviathans, which are six-legged walking tanks that are each the size of a small village. The leviathan is absolutely bristling with firepower, and Reynolds indicated that they plan on adding more before they're done with the game. Meanwhile, the Alim had a more conventional, fantasy-based army, with lots of magic users casting colorful and powerful spells. Each nation is actually a hodgepodge of different races, so you'll see a wide variety of units in the game. And each nation will have its own unique superunits, as well as two unique technology tracks it can research.
You can also checkout a video interview with Brian Reynolds on their Rise of Legends page.

Rise of Legends

Big Huge Games has announced their next RTS project, Rise of Legends. Brian Reynolds introduces the new game:
Rise of Legends! What's up with that?
So… you may have noticed we didn't do a history game this time! Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends is in so many ways the spiritual successor to Rise of Nations, but the long and the short of it is we got excited about doing a fantasy game. Now clearly your traditional "orcs, elves, dwarves" sort of fantasy has been—shall we say—thoroughly covered in other games, and so the story which got us excited is one where the magic of fantasy meets a world of technology. So magic and technology collide, with cataclysmic results! As you take a peek at our first two unique nations you can begin to see the contrast: the industrial Vinci with their Leonardo da Vinci inspired machines and steampunk cities; and the desert Alim with their Arabian Nights theme—sandstorms, genies, and tall glass spires. "Cataclysmic" is also a useful word to describe what we want to do visually—we've redesigned our graphics engine from the ground up because we want to make a game that gets our players as excited about our graphics as they have always been about our gameplay. The gameplay themes which players loved in Rise of Nations will be back in expanded form for Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends—national borders, cities, color-coded tech tracks, massive armies, and of course the open-ended strategic decisions of our "Conquer the World" engine. There will also be many new gameplay features that weren't seen in Rise of Nations. So come take a look at what we've been up to, and keep checking back as we reveal additional details about where we want to take real time strategy gaming next!
I can see them going to town with designs for the various nations - the concept art and screenshots already blows my mind. HeavenGames will have complete coverage of the game during E3 - be sure to check back for our reports and pictures!

RofL! (Sorry, couldn't resist...)
