What do you think sets your playstyle apart from the guys that want to play like you?

TuF_Astator
Man, you start with a difficult question... I think it is my adaptability. Some players like to have the initiative, I prefer to adapt to what my opponent is doing and use the best counter. Thats why I am often seen as a defensive player. Also, the key is to know when to attack. I often only attack once I am comfortable I can do significant damage.

TheGoodEvil
When do you feel like you are ready to deal "significant damage" to your enemies?

TuF_Astator
Usually, when my economy is maxed and I can spot a relatively easy target. i.e.: a new city without fort or river in the way. Or, that could be if I see my opponent expand or boom too much with few defense. Or, just if I know his army is a bit far. Also, considering the timing of nation specific bonus and unique units there is an optimal time to strike. It is a combination of factors but you always have to look for an opportunity.

TheGoodEvil
So would you say you are a good scouter? how do you scout your enemy?

TuF_Astator
Actually, you do not always have to rely on the scout unit. Early, you use it check which nation you face if the opponent was random and look for a barrack or incoming hoplite if it is an aggressive nation. But often, you can figure what his plan is just by looking at the land mass he is controlling, how quick he went for classical, if he already have a merchant at an economic rare. Also, most players tend to send their full army to put pressure on outskirt cities are showing how much they invested in military. Once most ruins have been collected to can use the scout or a raiding unit to find some unprotected spots with vilagers that are nice to raid. But often you can figure where they are just by guessing the best spot for your opponent to place his mines and woodcamps.

TheGoodEvil
Would you rather get Russia or Greek in a random 1v1 vs a good player?

TuF_Astator
I would pick Greek and hope for a map with fish.

TheGoodEvil
Do you use spies at all? what are their best uses?

TuF_Astator
I usually use at least 1 to 3 spies each game. First few spies are cheap, so it is a good complement in an army. Bribing the enemy general can get you the victory. Also, a group of 3-4 spies can also be a good defense if you are a bit behind on military. It may force your ennemy to run away.

TheGoodEvil
What is your favorite civ barring maya and spain?

TuF_Astator
French because they are good to boom or attack in any age (except Age1). I like their Heavy Cavs, supply wagon and free general.

TheGoodEvil
How much do you practice to becaome a great RoN player?

TuF_Astator
3 years of StarCraft background is what helped the most. Practicing on the MicroWars micro training map helped me a lot. A bit of the Reflex game for speed clicking is good too. I would say I play 10 to 20 hours of RoN every week. Also, I played a lot of 1v1s in the three weeks before the big Offensive nation 1v1 sponsored tourney. 1v1 is much better for learning.

TheGoodEvil
Would you say there is a big difference in playstyles between 1v1 and team games?

TuF_Astator
Yes, it is much harder to guess what to expect from your opponents in a 2v2. It is less appropriate to use a defensive/boom style as you may get attacked by multiple angles, be doubled or have to send help to your ally. 2v2 is more about being aggressive.

TheGoodEvil
Any tips for the "other than great" players out there?

TuF_Astator
Rewatch the replay of each of your losses and figure why you lost.

Try to integrate some quick simple hotkey routine. e.g.: if you ever have half a sec while your troops are retreating from a battle hit U, V to make a scholar etc. or L, T to research a SCI tech etc.

Also, keep in mind that you do not always have to "look" at your units while they are moving (army or raiding unit). You can just give the initial moving orders, then go start a few building constructions etc and then come back to your units.

TheGoodEvil
Thanks for all your time and knowledge!

TuF_Astator
It was a pleasure.
