Please allow me to interject a newbie question here. I've attempted to use decoys without success. I select my general and the appropriate command in the orders box. I then see what I assume is a yellow circle of influence, but then nothing. Where are the decoys? I see from the general's status bar that craft has been used, but no decoys. Please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

You have correlated my mind to a recorded game. I watch it over and over for a few times actually. It is a online game. The player uses real decoy strategy. He composed a small force but with a General in it. Then his main force would now started to move to attack a distant city. Whereas the decoy task force now moved to a nearer city at the other side of the border. He made it to the primary target city. His decoy was taken out though.

Add a few real units to the decoy army so its really able to kill villigers or whatever. That way it the enemy won't immediatley dismiss it as an "all decoy army", and will have to take appropriate action.

Do decoys have a time limit or do they last indefinitily until they are killed?

Can anyone tell me if decoys count against your pop-cap?
I've often wondered if sticking the whole lot on auto-explore might be more of an advantage - but not if they count against pop. Imagine 50 - 80 decoys running around creating panic and mayhem and gathering you the latest data on enemy whereabouts...

Wow, danywar, that ain't half bad, even if it was nothin but decoys, it still had to be a decent sized force of real troops that aint bad! Oh and Decoys are nice to use, if you have a large force to begin with, otherwise, it isn't so useful, I don't think, anyway

I tried that auto explore thing with decoys. They have a VERY small LOS. But as you have so many and they are free - and they also provide a nice confusion factor for your enemies, it is probably worth doing every now and then. At least they will provide more up to date information on enemy non-shooting buildings.

Not to mention that you can create decoys, send them off to auto-explore, and if you wait or have more than one general you can create a bunch to serve the 'meat-shield' purpose, too.

Most people have a scout with their army which makes decoys disappear in about 3 seconds. Their ability to serve as a meat shield is very limited imo.

Scout vision is much longer than most unit's range so they aren't going to absorb many shots, especially in a mixed army of decoys and reals. Using decoys to soak up hits is a waste of good general skills, unless you are desperately trying to hold onto a city. And ambush and forced marched are tons better at setting up flank attacks. This has been my experience.

Scouts do spot troops in an ambush. Sniping commandos is a great idea though. Unfortunately in patch 3, this isnt available until industrial.
