this can be done. you can go sci, 1 then sci 2 then everything else.
go sci 1 and build a temple. then wait a few moments . since you are already at a +15 wealth rate. you should be at sci2 levels rather quickly.
do this and you can save food and wood on the civ 1 nd commerce1 upgrades.giving you a bit of an early game edge.

but it also slows you down, why take sci 2 so fast? It has no early benefits besides extra ruins and semi-cheaper upgrades

It might be worth testing out, but the first thing I don't like about it is the temple. A temple that early is pretty useless. I'd rather try to work a market or a wealth rare in there. Rome is no spain though.

Tried this last night on an outback map and it semed to work pretty well. Went Sci1 Com1 Sci2. As I was pumping fbs I didn't miss the food and gold. I was a bit late with my 2nd city, but as it was a team game built on my outside ally and got a good expansion of territory and put the squeeze on War and Attalus.
Unfortunately I'm not sure it's wise putting the squeeze on War and Attalus at the same time, and the game went horribly wrong after that. Still I was ahead when they crushed me, daw, so maybe there's something in this.
