I am playing my first CTW game. Alexander.
I have always played quick battles against a single oponent so I have not used diplomacy before.
I made an allaince with a nation and then asked them to attack a neighbor with me.
They agreed.
I attacked and my ally did nothing.
Is it because I didn't go through their territory on the way ro attack or does the AI choose to ignore alliences at times?
How do you use diplomacy?

When you mean that your ally did nothing, do you mean that he didnt show up on the map at all or that he did show up on the map but didnt attack your enemy with you? If its the latter, it could be because the A.I is faulty in the game (Ive encountered many situations where they just hoard resources but do nothing). It may also be that the your ally is not at war with the faction you are fighting, but that would be unusual because even then they shoudl help you out.
As your allies though they cant just ignore you: They are forced to help you if possible and you are forced to help them.

mrcash is right. An AI ally will often just sit there and do nothing.
Often,AI allies are not very useful, and will often ignore/forget commands. At least having an ally is better than having no ally.

I use allies for the following.
1. Booming - If I'm the greeks and I want to be able to get lots of oil in the industrial age, I'll ally with someone so I can take all their oil.
2. Stability - Allies provide stability for your nation because you know that they will not declare war on you. Secondly, allies, if they are geographically bordering your enemy will provide physical support by blocking enemy troops from getting to your territory quickly.
3. Resources - If you ask your ally for resources, they usually will give them to you, and this is another helpful strategy.
