My best strategy as of now, (coz I've been using a lot of strategies in one game, and that's f****ing hard)... is this:
1.) ORGANIZE:
First, I organize 5-7 armies composing of 4 anti-infantry foot units, 4 anti-cavalry foot units, 4 unique foot units, 6 ranged cavalry, 2 artillery units, 1 supply unit, 1 spy, 1 scout, 1 general, in total of 27 (overall number of units) in population count, multiplied by 5 (number of armies) equals 135 in over all population count. They are made in my separate cities of my nation. If wondering how does the citizens work on this organized army, they are only about 15-18 in pop. count, 5-6 in each resources, namely food, timber and metal. It became my tactic because I believe the quote of Stalin, but in reverse... "Defense is the best offense."
2.) ATTACK:
Now, to the favorite and long part... Before I commence any assault, I make sure that my diplomacy to other nations are stable. Who attacks my allies first will be my first target of operation, that's how I measure my allegiance to my allies. News comes, my neighboring nation is my enemy. Looking its border city (a city near its borders), I form some of my organized armies (some are stationed at the cities, guarding) facing the city 20-30 tiles (and I mean tiles not miles) away. My formation is concave, because sometimes my enemies attack after seeing my army near. After waiting for about 4-5 minutes, I commence my assault.
Now for the assault, I form my armies in the city sides with some of my armies sieging the city. Then after the assimilation, I wait for enemy response, if they do, I'll defend the assimilated city in concave formation, but they don't, I form again my armies in front of the next target city, and repeat again back to organizing. If there are some losses like casualties, I'll replace them with new units. If no casualty attained, repeat the 2nd tactic.
FUN HABIT:
I name my cities with the names of kings and past rulers of my nation, for example, if I am using the British nation, I use names such as "George I", "George II" or own codename "Mark V" and use it as a city name, but naming it as a fort, like "Fort George III", "Fort Mark V", "Fort Sargon", any any names you like. You may try this out, and its fun!
As of now, this is my first longest post, ever.
