How do you guys micro planes? I think they're kinda tedious to use.
I usually assign airports to control groups then use "r" (rally point) to direct them wherever I want (I change the rally point constantly depending on what I need to attack). This way the whole 10 planes move where I want them to go. I also use infinite queue so that my airports are always full.
I seem to get some good results that way but I feel somewhat limited in control.

Something effective you can try (If you haven't already) is to get a good number of bombers, at least 30, then send them all to the same place. From there, you can select every bomber by clicking on one twice and then right-clicking on any building that you don't want to exist anymore. Also, send a group of 30 fighters to rip apart any units.

The hintbox at the start of each game can cycle through, and I do remember one of the hints tells you how to send out Bombers and Fighters selectively from any highlighted airbase. I don't remember what the exact combination is, but I seem to recall it's like this:
1. Highlight airbase (with a mix of Fighters and Bombers)
2. Hold ALT and right click to send out one type.
3. Hold CTRL and right click to send out the other type.
4. Hold ALT/CTRL and SHIFT and right click to send out all of that one type.
My computer has Chinese language inputs installed, so pressing SHIFT+ALT does really weird things in-game, so you can probably imagine I don't make use of this very often. I wish I could.
Otherwise, my control method is very similar to original poster's method. I usually build two Fighter airbases on infinite build, and one Bomber airbase on infinite build. Fighter airbases are set to F6 and F8, and Bombers are set to F7. The only real thing I do is to set the rally point with R. Occasionally if I really have to destroy a specific enemy unit (e.g. siege, supply, or general), I'll left click on one Fighter, hit HOME, and then right click on that enemy target. This happens rarely though.

I blitz enemy cities with 3 Bombers in a group, making them easier to manage.
I bomb the nearest building I could see, but before they turn around for another run I send them on the closest building in front of them. This rarely results in the destruction of a building but I do much more damage overall because my planes aren't wasting fuel flying in circles, and because my planes are sent in groups there are always 3 Bombers on that city. I only tried it in games against AIs, as real players will always try to distract you, making this micro-intensive tactic worthless. I'm now learning to time the bombing runs so that the planes could always be on top of their heads even when I'm not looking after them.
