Quote:

archer line? too many units?

Here is how it works (at least in the beta) so you get an idea.

At the Baracks there are 3 unit lines available. Light Infantry, Heavy Infantry, and Foot Archers. A unit line describes a grouping of units based upon certain attributes. In terms of Actual non unique units you would see the following (Going from Ancient - Medieval)

Light Infantry
Slingers
Javelineers
Elite Javelineers

Heavy Infantry
Hoplites
Phalanx
Pikemen

Foot Archers
Bowmen
Archers
Crossbowmen

What the unique units do in the game is replace one of these unit lines with one specific to the nation. So for the Japaneese the barracks looks like this

Light Infantry
Slingers
Javelineers
Elite Javelineers

Heavy Infantry
Ashigura Spearmen
Bushi
Elite Bushi

Foot Archers
Bowmen
Archers
Crossbowmen

and for Aztecs it is like this

Light Infantry
Atl-Atl
Royal Atl-Atl
Xopili Atl-Atl

Heavy Infantry
Hoplites
Phalanx
Pikemen

Foot Archers
Bowmen
Archers
Heavy Archers

Now at certain points some of the lines get substituted with new unit lines. As an example when you hit the gunpowder age the Light infantry line becomes the Gunpowder Infantry line and all your Javelineers can be upgraded to Arquebusiers. This does not always happen though. In the case of Samurai they are considered to be Heavy Infantry so in the Gunpowder age they are the next upgrade from the Elite bushi. Hope this clears things up a bit for you.

No. Samurai are in the Gunpowder age, and Gun Samurai are in the Enlightenment age. I'll see if I can't recall this line for all the ages from memory. Might be a little off though.

Ashigaru Spearmen
Bushi
Elite Bushi
Samurai
Gun Samurai
Anti Tank Rifle
Bazooka
Anti Tank Missle

This would be all the "Heavy Infantry" units for the Japanese going through all 8 of the ages.

For anyone without Unique Heavy infantry, the same line looks like this

Hoplites
Phalanx
Pikemen
Elite Pikemen
Fusilers
Anti Tank Rifle
Bazooka
Anti Tank Missle

If you haven't been able to tell yet, I am working on getting all this info out for everyone in the near future. It's a lot of work as I am sure you can tell, but this really seems to be something the fans are interested in seeing.

hi fellas,

whaz up?

hmm nobody said something about the turks.
Are there other muslim civz then turks and egypts (later)?
If there would be an addon to RON i would like to see Arabs and persians or Moghuls.

And i have some ideas for the Turks.
It would be cool if they would have the same artset like the Mongols till the classical age. And in the Medievil Age they should have oriental art set.

Because the civ Turks should also include the Turkmens the Uigurs the Gokturks the Seljuks and the Ottomans and the Annatolian Turks (all Turkic's) off course.

You know that the Turks come from Central Asia (Altai)
the turkic people there live in yurts and are nomads.

I would like to see Turks which build Yurts and not Houses.
I am sure you can remember the yurts from AOE II.

okay that was my opinion, i hope someone will like it.

Hi, Bakma!

Big Huge Games has mentioned an expansion for Rise of Nations, and India, Persia, the Arabs and others have all been repeatedly suggested.

There have been some hints that the Turks in Rise of Nations will at least have some special bonus for artillery.

PS: I like the Hadith you mentioned in your signature; Ramadhan Mubarak!

I think the Arabs are very important. It is wrong of those who say that Turks and Arabs are the same.

Anyway, my wishlist in civs for expack would be:

Vikings, Celts, Arabs, Persians...

Neo, in order to stop your insanity, here is how it works at RoNH. We typically wait for an official write up to be done and published on GameSpy. Once that is released, we have a good sense of what information is considered publicly available regarding that particular nation in the game. At a certain point we are going to eclipse Gamespy with our coverage and we will start putting out the historical information prior to knowing any of the in game information. We'll fill in the in game information when we have it, but I honestly have no idea what the publishing schedule is like for GameSpy. They will do Britian eventually but I can't tell you when that will be.

The British in RoN:

Here are a few scattered references to the British in RoN. Realize things could easily change and do pay attention to the dates.

UGO RoN Preview, 1 Mar 02: “…the British have better resource bonuses…”

Brian Reynolds, RU:RoN Part 5 at Apolyton, Aug 02: “…the British get more resources and their ships and archers are better equipped…”

IGN RoN Preview, 13 Sep 02: “The same holds true in the game, and the advent of the Crossbow raises this line [foot archers] -- with the exception of the various unique units available to the British, Nubian, and Korean players -- to its height of effectiveness.”

Thunder, RoN Heaven, 18 Sep 02: “Brits are in, and they rock. They get some very impressive unique units.”

Also, we’ve seen Churchill tanks in several screenshots, and the standard Modern/WWII fighter aircraft is modeled on the Spitfire.

About Russian history.

Cossacks were not an independent nation as you think. Russians or ukranians that lived in "kazachestva" were called cossacks.

Over the course of our beta testing we've learned more about what kinds of nation powers players think are cool. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most popular nations have been the ones that have really strong and unique powers, so we've been going back and "punching up" the powers to make them even more exciting--when some nations turn out to be stronger than others our philosophy is not to make the strong nations weaker but to make the weak nations stronger. We've also been organizing them into named "themes" so that a nation's powers feel more coherent.

So for instance compare the following to what we had listed before:

The Aztecs have the Power of Sacrifice.
* Gain 10 bonus resources per Age when your troops slay an enemy.
* Plunder from enemy buildings doubled.
* Receive 2 free Light Infantry whenever you build a new Barracks.

So we got rid of the "Citizen Move" power which didn't seem to get anyone excited. The old (and cool) power of getting resources by slaying enemies has been enhanced by increasing when you advance in Age, and by being applied to building destruction as well. And you get free units (!!!) whenever you finish a Barracks**.

** I'm sure that last power will spark some interesting discussions! :-)

Here's one more from the nations we've already shown:

The Egyptians have the Power of the Nile.
* Start with a Granary, and receive Granary upgrades for free.
* Wonders cost 25% less, can be built an age early, and you may build two per City.
* Scholars cost Food instead of Wealth.

So again the existing powers have been punched up a bit, and we've added new ones until playtesters fight over who gets to be the Egyptians.

The unique units work as has been described in the thread. Keeping in mind we're doing a game about all of history, our goals have been to give nations unique units to use that increase both the power and historical flavor that nation, while also:
* Ideally providing every nation with a unique twist in many different historical periods.
* Not overwhelming players with too many kinds of units to build.
* Making unique units persist for at least 3-4 ages--meaning they need to be able to upgrade to more advanced units.
* Always allow players to partially "recover their investment" in soldiers with earlier weapons by retraining them with more modern weapons.

One other thing to remember is that a nation's "unique units" aren't the only ones that will contribute to the visual flavor of their nation. A Korean Arquebusier looks a lot different from a French Arquebusier, for instance.
