I've noticed people complaining about not being able to play Rise of Nations because of bugs, patch problems... etc.

So... here's what the community can do to help BHG solve these issues and get them fixed.

1. Give a brief description of the problem. For example:
Game doesn't patch.

2. Give a detailed system analysis of you computer specs. To make this easier for people to find out what they have, go here and download the Belarc Advisor at www.belarc.com/free_download.html and/or just browse through your Device Manager.
For example:
1.8MGz Intel Pentium 4 (Win XP Pro. SP1 build 2600)
Dell OptiPlex GX240 MB with BIOS A03 03/01/2002
512MB RAM
40GB Hard Drive with 21.85GB Free Space.
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4400 with driver 4.3.4.5 03/20/2003
(Optional) Cable Modem w/Firewall... etc.
Rise of Nations retail (English version) build 01.13.04.1801
No mods, no cracks, no trainers... etc.

3. Give a more detailed description of the problem. For example:
When updating the patch through GameSpy, it will download 100% then bring me back to desktop and patch RoN until it reaches 37%, then it will stop and give me an "Invalid Patch File Error" and a "Retcode positive - 32769". I have the English version of the game.

4. Give reproduction steps on how to make it happen again. For example:
1. Launch the game.
2. Go to Multiplayer Game.
3. Go to GameSpy Internet Matchmaking.
4. Click "OK" when it says to upgrade to version 01.14.05.0902.
5. When the download is complete, log into GameSpy with your password.
6. Observe the game going to desktop and stopping at 37% during the patch process.

5. If it's a multiplayer game, be sure to specify if it was through GameSpy Arcade, GameSpy Internal, or LAN/IP. Then list the settings for the Multiplayer game. For example:
Teams of 3
Great Lakes
Large (5/6 player)
No Cannon Time
Custom
End Age: Gunpowder Age
Elimination: Conquest
Victory: Conquest
Tournament Play enabled.
3 Humans vs. 3 Computers (Moderate, Moderate, and Tough)
Nations in the game were:
Aztecs, Mongols, Chinese, Chinese, Egyptians, and Russians.

6. If it's a single player Quick Battle game, list the same steps as in #5. If it's a Conquer the World Single Player Campaign... list:
1. What your Nation is.
2. What difficulty setting you have.
3. What Age it was in.
4. What country you were attacking, and what battle type it was.
5. What build you're in... and what build you started your Campaign in. For instance, the retail is 01.13.04.1801, and the patch is 01.14.05.0902. Did you start a campaign in the retail version and save the campaign... and then upgrade to the patch and load the campaign?

If you see your bug listed here already from someone else, just give your #2. Computer Specs.

Wierd network problem...posted down a few threads...nobody seems to know what's up.

OK, so, I go to Multiplayer > Local Area Network or Direct Connect ("LAN Game"). I click on it, it freezes for just a second, and a message pops up telling me that I am not connected to the network. Which is complete BS.
I have reinstalled and tried this with and without the latest patch. No dice.

Well, I might have good news regarding OOS errors. I took the idea that it may be a video or AGP issue. I downloaded the AMD patch and that didn't work, reduced the game to smaller map and 75 pop--didn't work. But the last two games played all the way through when I changed my video setting FROM 32 bit to 16 bit. 2nd game actually increased map to large 5-6 player / 100 pop with 1 AI hard setting and two of us.

My machine is:
1.4 AMD Duron
512 RAM
40G HD
128 meg GeForce FX 5200
Win2k
Cable connection=I host

His machine
700 PII
512 RAM
40G HD
32 meg GeForce 2
Win2k
Dual modem dial up(pseudo-ISDN) 50-60kpbs = He joins

We'll see this weekend if it continues to work.

Weird, probably unique bug but don't know.

Playing quick battle, 2x2 comp. 2 minutes in, I start browsing through the options to look for a gamma correction feature (had to reinstall, darker than normal. Couldn't find one, good idea for next patch!). I changed my resolution, however, I cancelled instead of applying changes. After about 3 seconds, the game froze on a blackscreen, with the music still playing. I had to ctrl+alt+del twice to close the program (wasn't responding).

P4 2.0 GHz
Win98
512MB Ram
ASUS V8170Magic Geforce 4 MX420 G-card
512MB Ram
60GB HD (The partition the game is on has 30)

[Note: Apologize if this has been posted, I couldn't bother reading through 9 pages of tech support problems.]

Hi there..
I installed RON and tried to play it. After selecting the game (Conquer the world) when i said start, during the load time it closes abruptly with an error message "runtime error: expception in Microsoft VC++ runtime library. Abnormal Program Termination". After this I installed the updates available on the Microsoft Website and reinstalled the game. Now, when i try to open the game, it doesnt even load. i checked with the windows debugger and it says 'unkown exception in mlang.dll'

My specs:
1.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4
Intel D850MV Mother Board
NVidia TNT2 Model 64 graphics card. Driver ver: 4.4.0.3
Windows XP Pro

If u can please advice what to do. Hope to get some help soon as am dying to play !!! :-(

Played again tonight and all's well. Played smooth and no hitches at all. Great game. Really quite unbelievable that, for us, the problem would be so bizzare. See my previous posts to see what we did to beat the OOS errors. Good luck to everyone else.

After installing Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000 I can't play at all. Before I could play from 5-15 minutes before the system hang and the sounds were left ringing

Now while loading, the game hangs and starts the "gathering exception data" thing.

I lowered the hw acceleration level of my gfx card and disabled all unnecessary background services, result: the game works as before, 5-15 minutes of active playing -> hang up. Power cycle.

I'm having trouble with crashes. Every time I played the game it crashed. Maybe after the end of a turn, maybe a few hours into a game, whenever. I had the newest drivers for everything, I checked just days ago. I also had the latest patch for the game at the time. It's much worse than just that, though... Usually it just kicks me back to the desktop, but this time the game caused my computer to restart spontaniously, and it hasn't booted since! It killed my OS!!! (Writing from safe-mode) I checked for viruses and there aren't any, scandisk said there's nothing wrong with my hard drive, and Windows 98 still works fine (dual boot).

system info:
Athlon XP 1800+
Giga-byte - VIA KT333
Corsair 256MB DDR333
GeForce 4 Ti 4200
Sound Blaster Live
Windows 2000 pro SP4
Windows 98

I'm obviously going to have to reinstall win2000 since it just won't do anything. The only thing that's still usable is the task manager, but it won't close after you open it... The start menu doesn't even open.

I previously reported a machine with many probelms in playing RoN at the following configuration:

Player 1
P4-2.66 Win XP Pro DX9a, 1GB Dual Channel Ram
Intel 865PERLL, Raid 2-SATA 160G Seagate
Leadtek GForce 5200 128mb
On board sound

We had since made a few changes and now everything is fine, no more random quit, restart.. out of sync.

Player 1
P4-2.66 Win XP Pro Dx9a, 1GB (upgrade to PC3200) running Dual Chaneel.
Intel 865PERLL, Raid 2-SATA 160G
GForce 5600!
new 3COM Lan. card

Surprise to see what a few changes had done to the game, now it loads almost instantly, and runs smoothly even to 4 Player endgame. Frame rate is excellent!

RoN seems very sensitive to CPU to Video/Sound throughput. My P3 is fine with just GForce 5200, and DDR300 ram.

Athlon +2400 (Windows XP Home)
512 DDR SDRAM
80 GB Hard Drive (45 GB's free right now)
GeForce 4 MX420 Video Card
DirectX 9.0a
56K Modem

I already made a thread on this one, but I thought I'd write it in here too. I spent a very long time downloading RoN, with my 56K Modem, and then the installer appeared to be 'dead'... It acted like an old MSDOS shortcut... A 'DOS-Style' window flashed up for a second, then disappeared, and the action was over... I really don't understand it, since I have had no problems with any other programs in the past, and, above all, this came directly from the microsoft website.

I posted this on the "Game Crashes" thread, and thought I'd add it to the this one since this thread is for reporting bugs. My old message is at: http://ron.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=13,2096,0,10

Here is a cut & paste of my problem:

"I am also having problems with crashing. I've been scanning the archives on this forum and trying all possible fixes, with no luck. Did the AMD for Win2k update thing, notched down the acceleration for Graphics & Audio, toggled from 16-bit to 32-bit color, updated my chipset / video / audio drivers, obtained all updates from windowsupdate.com, etc.

I've only been playing multiplayer, and the game randomly locks up in the first 20 minutes of play. I've never advanced past the medieval period. When it locks up, I experience a full system freeze... cannot move mouse, graphics are frozen, and my sound card just hangs on the last tone before crashing. It takes anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes for the system to freeze."

Hi all,
I looked for awhile but gave up trying to find someone else with the same problem (10 pages of bugs is alot) so im just going to state it.

I have had several problems.
1. crashes- The game crashs the whole computer. This seems to happen when i select one of my unit groups (Ex. Ctrl-1) at least the last time, but im not sure if this is what did it all 3 times.

2. Units not upgrading- What i mean by this is that the units are not changing over time. For example the villager look the same in the Ancient age as the info age. The other units ive caught that do this are the general (witch looks like a guys on a horese but the icon has a Gen. Patton ish guy on a jeep, and it sounds like a car and makes car tracks) trade caravan (merchant looks right though, and fishing ship. the villagers do change to there winter cloths IF they start in a winter environment. I do see the newer units in the senario editor. But when i started a game from the enlightenment age the units were still messed up. This happened with the trial version too.

3. Network games- my bro and i tried to start a network game but when you try and join the comp says connection timed out, so we used the join IP settings. that was realy glitchy, and it constantly said the it was waiting on the others computer. every time it would eventualy dissconnect us from each other.

My Computer=

Hard Drive= 80gb
*I JUST GOT A NEW ONE. MY OLD ONE WAS A 10GB, THE SAME PROBLEMS OCCURED

Processer= Intel Pentium III 763MHz

128 MB of RAM

graphics card-ASUS V9180
64 MB
GeForce4 MX 440 AGP8X
bios information: version 4.18.2006

Rise of Nations:
Retail/english

THIS IS A GREAT GAME, IT HAS ALOT OF POTETIAL, I JUST NEEDS THE BUGS NOCKED OUT OF IT!

*if you need any more info on what caused the problem please email me or post it here

finnnnnaally can actually play the game

I am having trouble getting RON to run after I upgrade to the new patch. I can install my game right off the cd and get everything to work fine. Then, when I go to play online it says I need a new patch so I download and let it self install. After the patch is in, when I try to boot the game I get an error telling me to insert the right CD, but it is in the drive. There is no dust or scratches on the CD and the game works perfectly without the patch. I want to play online though, so any help would be appreciated.

I have a stability problem with RON. I definately noticed a crash once when a new merchant was generated. However that is not the only time the game crashes on me. It happens fairly often with the longest I have gone without a game crash is about 30 min.

System Specs.
Athlon 3200+, 1GB RAM, Asus A7N8X-Deluxe Mobo.
MSI FX5900 Ultra nVidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra 256MB DDR
Using onboard nVidia audio.

Resolution: 1920x1200 [ Sony Widescreen LCD monitor ]
Win2k SP4, Dx9
Nvidia Nforce: 2.03
Nvidia Graphics: 44.03
RON: 1.02

I have reinstalled my OS 4 times, run memory burn in programs, and have no problems with other games. Also tried removing virus protection program, SETI etc. I also noted that if I do not reboot the system after RON crashes on me my other games will also crash after a while.

This game would be a lot of fun if not for its tendency to crash to the desktop.

Other quirks, what looks like black diagonals flashing across the screen on occasion. Complete freeze/lockup up after which the game continues.

A few updates:
Downloaded and ran Hot CPU to verify that my system was working correctly. It failed the quick sort tests. Upgraded my BIOS for my A7N8X board from 1.03 to 1.05. It now passes the quick-sort tests. I ran the burn in tests for 6 hours. So no more mobo problems.

However RON still crashes.

Saw a thread on this board about temperature spikes on the GPU. I attached a water block {My CPU, RAM and disks are already water cooled.} to my Graphics card, RON ran a little longer I think, temperature was at 91C when the game crashed. This was in the yellow zone. The red zone where the GPU starts slowing down for the FX5900 is 140C.
