I've noticed people complaining about not being able to play Rise of Nations because of bugs, patch problems... etc.

So... here's what the community can do to help BHG solve these issues and get them fixed.

1. Give a brief description of the problem. For example:
Game doesn't patch.

2. Give a detailed system analysis of you computer specs. To make this easier for people to find out what they have, go here and download the Belarc Advisor at www.belarc.com/free_download.html and/or just browse through your Device Manager.
For example:
1.8MGz Intel Pentium 4 (Win XP Pro. SP1 build 2600)
Dell OptiPlex GX240 MB with BIOS A03 03/01/2002
512MB RAM
40GB Hard Drive with 21.85GB Free Space.
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4400 with driver 4.3.4.5 03/20/2003
(Optional) Cable Modem w/Firewall... etc.
Rise of Nations retail (English version) build 01.13.04.1801
No mods, no cracks, no trainers... etc.

3. Give a more detailed description of the problem. For example:
When updating the patch through GameSpy, it will download 100% then bring me back to desktop and patch RoN until it reaches 37%, then it will stop and give me an "Invalid Patch File Error" and a "Retcode positive - 32769". I have the English version of the game.

4. Give reproduction steps on how to make it happen again. For example:
1. Launch the game.
2. Go to Multiplayer Game.
3. Go to GameSpy Internet Matchmaking.
4. Click "OK" when it says to upgrade to version 01.14.05.0902.
5. When the download is complete, log into GameSpy with your password.
6. Observe the game going to desktop and stopping at 37% during the patch process.

5. If it's a multiplayer game, be sure to specify if it was through GameSpy Arcade, GameSpy Internal, or LAN/IP. Then list the settings for the Multiplayer game. For example:
Teams of 3
Great Lakes
Large (5/6 player)
No Cannon Time
Custom
End Age: Gunpowder Age
Elimination: Conquest
Victory: Conquest
Tournament Play enabled.
3 Humans vs. 3 Computers (Moderate, Moderate, and Tough)
Nations in the game were:
Aztecs, Mongols, Chinese, Chinese, Egyptians, and Russians.

6. If it's a single player Quick Battle game, list the same steps as in #5. If it's a Conquer the World Single Player Campaign... list:
1. What your Nation is.
2. What difficulty setting you have.
3. What Age it was in.
4. What country you were attacking, and what battle type it was.
5. What build you're in... and what build you started your Campaign in. For instance, the retail is 01.13.04.1801, and the patch is 01.14.05.0902. Did you start a campaign in the retail version and save the campaign... and then upgrade to the patch and load the campaign?

If you see your bug listed here already from someone else, just give your #2. Computer Specs.

I have had many problems/bugs with the both the Full Retail version and Demo version off "Rise of Nations"

For overview, I have put them into 3 groups:

1.Game crashing:
a) everytime, durring a game +/- after 1 hour, the game freezes and I was forced to reboot my laptop
b) repeatable Crah to desctop durring loading of map (see 3a)

2.Sound problems:
a) sound become scruwed after a lot of souynds are generated
b) multiple music soungs play at the same time
c) after many sound sould be heard (in a massive bombardment), the sound aren't played at all

3.Campaign bugs:
a) durring Loading map when either attacking or defending a map, the the game crashes to desctop an displays the error message "abnormal program execution in file nation.exe"
b) when attacking or defending a enemy nation, I ofter don't have the option to deplay my bonus cards
c) the overrun attack don't seem to work. When I try to attack a nation (with one army and city stength 7) with 2 supporting armies (who have a direct attack line with the nation),
I supposed to be able to averun the enemy because I have 2 more armies than then enemy right?

4.Patch problems
After installing the path I'm not able to relaod any of my saved games.

History:
On Windows ME, I played the demo and I expereiced both problem 1a and 2a. After I installed a fresh copy of Mindows XP and dissbles hardware acceleration for sound,
problem 1a) disspeared but problem 2b/2c arised. I dicided I could live with this an bough the retail

After buying and installin the (fresh) retail version, I started a new campaign as the british. I battled myself all the way though south america when problems 3a, 3b and 3c arised. I can live with bug 3b and 3c but 3a makes playing imposible.

I download patch 1.1 (from official site) and installed it but after that problem 4 aarised so I was forced to uninstall RoN and install it RoN again

I'm realy desperate! I hope you can help.

Here are my system specs of my Laptop:

Hey mine works NOW! Donít know if this would help others, but I was about to reinstall RON because of the problem with CTW, but I uninstalled Game spy first, then I tried to run RON, and it worked! I still had it set to 32bit, donít know if uninstalling the Game spy actually did it, but before, I got it to work for 2 campaigns, after I changed the 16bit to 32 bit, but after the 2 campaigns it got the same error. But hey it works now!! Was kind of afraid to turn off my pc, thought the problem would come back but it hasnít.

I've encountered the quick battle SP save bug others here have mentioned. Have a save about 25 minutes into a game against 3AI that loads, but when unpaused CTD without any error given or anything. Only other thing I've noticed is a whitening effect on some mountain sides.

Interesting that I have a CTW campaign save mid a campaign that loads and plays fine, so seems to be a prob with just the quick battle save feature.

Also if someone from BHG could explain why the save games are stored outside of the main RON directory?

Other than this prob I really like the game and graphics and fps are good for my box.

Thx

Hey Lawn Boy! Yes, I have exactly the same problem as you do. I can play, just can't load a saved game without it crashing back to desktop. I hope they get this fixed!

Good luck!

I'm having the now-infamous CtW crash bug (CtW crashes to desktop while loading). I'm running:

P4 2.4 ghz
384 MB DDR ram (but this also occurred with 128 mb ram)
32 mb ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card
Windows XP
DirectX 9.0a
28 gb hard disk with about 14 gb remaining
Running Windows and RoN in 1024x768x32 resolution and depth
Running patched version 1.1 of RoN (but this also occurred with v1.0)
Gamespy arcade uninstalled (but this also occurred with it installed)

And I don't have any DirectX problems. Interestingly, I'm not getting the usual problems for my video card (ie, buildings displayed in all white textures) but I am getting this bug.

By the way, if you're getting saved game crashes to desktop while loading, it's likely because you're trying to play v1.0 games with the v1.1 patch. I got frustrated with this a few times before I realized the problem. Now my saved games work.

Well, i dun haf a problem in installing,
but i haf a minor problem is that my monitor can't support resolutions higher than 800 X 600, so i just can't play the game as the default is 1024 X 768..
i tried the rise2.ini files, set the resolutions there and all other options but it just can't drop to 800 X 600..

any gd ideas to solve this?

Alright, I have prove the "Campaign Map loading bug" is a program bug and no hardware conflict.

I installed RoN on another computer (Windows 98, 800 Mz AMD, 256MB, Geforce I) and;

- Started a new campaign as british (hard difficulty).
- First turn attack scandinavia
- Second turn attack greenland
- Third turn, declare war on aztech and invade noth east america

at this moment ,when loading the map, i did not have any oputunity to use my cards and the game also crashed to desctop telling there was an abnormal termination of nation.exe

This bug is repeatable and should work on any computer!
I'm starting to wonder if beeing a british fifhting aztech has anything to do with the problem

When I zoom in and out via the mouse wheel or page up/down keys, the display does not remain centered on the same area. The view shifts each time you zoom, until it finally reaches the edge of the map(as if you were slowly scrolling to the edge of the map).

Very annoying to have to keep centering your view on a particular area after zooming in or out.

Win XP, ATI 9700 pro, 1GB memory. Latest 3.4 drivers.

I use Windows XP and my system all of a sudden hardlocks during singleplayer and multiplayer games. This can happen after 2 minutes of play or after 10 or 25 or 32 or whatever, just all of a sudden.

The lock has the same nature everytime. I cannot ctrl+alt+delete, not alt+tab, not anything. The weird things is that my screen freezes, yet I can still move the mouse and the music keeps on playing without a stutter. So it seems that only the graphics are freezing.

Here are my full specs:

My specs:

MSI KT333 Ultra ARU (latest bios rev. and latest Via drivers)
AMD 2400+
Ati Radeon 8500 (catalyst 3.4)
Soundblaster Audigy 2 (latest official drivers)
512 mb pc2700 DDR ram
Logitech MX 700 mouse (latest drivers)
Windows XP, service pack 1, direct X 9.0a

Nothing is overclocked and my system doesn't lockup or crash with any other game I have installed and played with this setup and these drivers: Warcraft III, Age of Wonders II, Neverwinter Nights, Galactic Civilizations, DTM Race Driver, Age of Mythology, Championship Manager 4. 3DMark 2002SE works flawless too, I can repeat the test for 12 hours straight without a crash of lockup.

Is it perhaps the mousesoftware? (just guessing) Since I've seen a lot of people with different setups (videocards, processors, soundcards and mobo's but no mention about mice) having these problems.

I have the "Unable to establish network connection. Please check your connection and try again" error when I try to play multiplayer. I am current with all my Windows updates and all other network resources on my machine are working fine. This seems to be one of the most prevalent issues on the board, but there hasn't been a reliable fix for this issue posted. Any ideas?

lord the ron: i have the same problem, as do severak others, the only thing we have in common is our soundcard,
bhg did/does say they have some major issues with the audigy2 at the moment. hopefully the next patch will solve this.

the only temporary solution i can offer anyone with the same kind of problem is to disable yer audigy2 (onboard soundcards make it pretty angry aswell so avoid 'em), and play without sound, it make take something away from the game. a rise of nations game without sound. is better than no rise of nations game at all.....

When playing mutiplayer LAN games you get the error "out of sync ammo" or "out of sync build". Both versions of the game are identical...no modding at all.

No cracks, mods, trainers. I am crashing to the desktop most of the time. Sometimes I get the blue screen, only with no text telling me the error forcing me to hit reset.

I've been through reinstalling the game numerous times. I already had the newest drivers before the game install, but I installed the drivers again anyway. I've tried tweaking most of the video settings. This sucks.

I should have just lit a match to a $50 bill and got it over with.

___________________________________________________________

I'm having the same problem. I do not have any difficulties with my other online games. Everquest hasn't given me a problem and neither has Half-Life.

I can get online through the Gamespy Arcade, but not by accessing the in-game launchers for Multiplayer games.

I use an Actiontec modem/router. Last night I tried port forwarding and DMZ and disenabling NAT, and none of it seemed to work (although I am a noob at this sort of thing and may not have done it correctly).

My specs are 700 mhz, 512 RAM. I'm not sure of the video or sound card. Direct X 9.0, and I have all the Window's updates. I also recently downloaded and installed the patch.

When using CONTROL GROUPS, it zooms needlessly.

How do you prevent the game from zooming in when you use control groups?

So I go CTRL-1 on a bunch of units. Then I go look at something else far far away. Then I push '1' once, it selects my group1. If I push twice it centers the map on the units, which is what I want, but also it zooms the map in!! ARGH

Very annoying, can this be disableD?

can't even get past anywhere, get black screen when i try to run the game. please email a reply to wavebringer@hotmail.com or just here will do. cheers =)

oh yeah, uninstalled codecs and no difference...

also have not installed any of latest windows updates as i am waiting for service pack 2 to come out with all the bugs fixed before i install it. too many bugs atm ( down the forum) to take a risk and it slows down processor speed as well anyhow.

HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM

ok, it's posted somewhere on the forums that if you can't get past the beginning stages (Load up of RON) you have to disable the movies n all. do so by going to the Rise2.ini file in the main folder and change this
SkipIntroMovies=1
it has to equal to 1 to disable the movie playing alright?
hope it works for you guys. worked for me.

I have the same problem that wavebringer is having. I installed fine but when I try to run I get a blackscreen & nothing happens.

I've been running Rise of Nations since the day it came out without any problems (including playing on Gamespy.)

Last night I ran Windows Update for the first time in several months. I downloaded and installed 4 security updates dealing with Internet Explorer, and nothing else (there were many more updates available but I only took the security updates.)

Afterwards I loaded up my most recent saved game in RoN. This game is an 8 player contest on Southwest Mesa. The first thing I noticed is that the sides of the ridge's (where you mine on this sort of map) were snow white instead of ruddy brown. The game loaded paused (I have it set to do that), and when I hit the pause button to resume play, RoN dumped to desktop.

I repeated this problem several times.

Later, I went back to the Microsoft site and downloaded the Direct X 9.0a update hoping this would solve the problem. It did not.

Today I started a new game on a Southwest Mesa with 8 players. I played halfway through the game without problem. I saved the game and exited Rise of Nations. Later when I reloaded the game, everything looked normal, but hitting the pause button to restart the action dumped to desktop, just as in the other save.

Obviously something in the Microsoft security updates is incompatible with Rise of Nations. Since these were all presumably related to Internet Explorer I can't imagine how that might be, though I'm sorry to say it is consistent with my past experience with Microsoft that nothing runs worse under Windows than other software published my Microsoft.

Here's the specs on my machine:

Windows XP
P4 1.7 Ghz
512 MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 2 MX
2 sound cards:
Creative SB Live!
M Audio Delta 66

Please send me a personal message through this site if you can help me or need more details.

2 bugs

1. After gamespy autopatched the game to the latest version, I cannot load any in game save games (I can load COnquer the World map save games), I get

BHG RTS run time fatal
Error Loading Section, possinly in leaderdata
Safe to ignore: no

And the game crashes out.

2. I have an adsl connection and share that connection via a netowrk.
When hosting a gamespy game, anyone can join the preliminary screen, but when I click launch only players behind the network are still there.

Bug Update:

After uninstalling RoN, uninstalling all recent M$ updates, then reinstalling M$ updates, installing latest video drivers, etc., then reinstalling RoN, the game still dumps to desktop on loading a saved game.

The game used to work flawlessly.

Obviously something Microsoft did to my machine has screwed the game up when I first downloaded "security updates" for Windows XP.

What's interesting, and disturbing, is that even after using M$'s own "System Restore" to undo all changes back to the last point that Rise of Nations worked flawlessly, the problem remains. What this means is that System Restore is in fact *not* a "system restore" and won't undue certain changes that Microsoft made to my machine when I downloaded security updates from their site.

Welcome to Bill Gates' world...

Quoted from Scrubs:

1. Go to your Rise of Nations folder which is probably in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations.
a. Open your rise2.ini file and change these settings to what I describe below:
ForceHardwareCursor=1
See if it works, if not:
ForceGDICursor=1

See if it works, if not:
ForceBWCursor=1

See if it works, if not:
Sound Enabled=0

See if it works, if it does, it's your sound card, if it doesn't, you can change all those back to the original settings.

We'll move on to plan C.]

My first post here and I'm having problems with the Single Player and Multi-player game crashing and Windows XP going to a Blue Screen. This happens anywhere from 2 minutes to 20 minutes into the game...VERY FRUSTRATING!!!! I've tried several troubleshooting measures and the only way I could get the game to run without crashing is set
Sound Enabled=0 in the ris2.ini file. My system specs are

Windows XP SP1 (all of the latest updates installed)
Direct 9.0a
Soyo Dragon KT333 Lite
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
512MB Crucial RAM
Chaintech TI4200 128MB
TurtleBeach SantaCruz

My sound card is not sharing an IRQ with anything as I've moved it to another slot on my motherboard. I've istalled the lastest drivers from NVidia and TurtleBeach. I've installed the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers. Nothing works unless I disable my sound. One wierd thing to note is that when my computer blue screens it complains about the nv4_disp.dll. I cannot figure this one out. I've tried uninstalling the Nvidia drivers completely and then reinstalling again. No luck...the only thing that works is disabling the sound. What's the point of playing a game without sound? None of my other games have this Problem. Including Dungeon Siege and Freelancer, both are Microsoft titles and these games don't crash. I also have other games that run rock solid for hours like UT2003, C&C Generals, Nascar 2003 Season, and Splinter Cell. I've never had any problems with my system up until RON. As of right now, I would like to play the game because I've payed good money for it. But since this game obviously doesn't like my system, I can't! Any ideas BHGs?

Another Frustrated Customer ;-p

Bug update for Santa Cruz owners! I've managed to play a game with sound and it not crash! If you have the Santa Cruz control panel running in the taskbar close it and then play the game again. I played at 1024x768 16-bit with sound and it did not crash one time. I'm going to crank up the resolution to 1024x768 32-bit while playing a multi-player game and then finally up to 1280x1024.

I hope this helps someone! I'll post another message just as soon as I test some more.

Since my other thread has gotten no response in many days I will post it here also.

Rise of Nations suffers from random crash problems. These problems have not surfaced in any other game I've played, nor has my computer crashed except whilst playing RoN since I set it up approx. 10 days ago. I have played Medieval: Total War, Everquest, and Morrowind extensively (for several hours at a sitting), while also looping 3DMark, memtest-86, and Windows Memory Diagnostic overnight with no problems. So, I have come to the conclusion that the problem is not my computer, but the Rise of Nations game itself. The belief is furthered by the fact that at least 50 people have posted on various newsgroups or on this board itself of the exact same problems I've been experiencing.

There are 3 types of crashes, all of which have occurred anywhere from 3 minutes to 90 minutes into the game (generally falling around the 5-20 minute mark), these have occurred in multiplayer quick battles as well as solo quick battles, I have not played the CtW campaign, although I surmise the same issues would arrise there -

1) Approx. 90% of the time, the game will hard lock my computer, but I'll still be able to move my mouse cursor around and music will continue to play for a random interval of time. Sometimes after a while (30 seconds or so) the music will turn off and staticy popping type noises start coming from my speakers. Only solution is to reset, or power off/on.

2) Approx. 10% of the time, the game will crash to desktop. Just kicks me out, terminates the game, and leaves me on desktop. Nothing much special here.

3) One time (out of about, oh, 30 or 40 crashes?) it did a spontaneous reboot.

About 25% of the time after I reset to Windows XP, a dialogue window will come up telling me that Microsoft has detected an error in the ati2dvag.dll file, and in my Radeon 9500/9700 drivers. I have tried using the follow drivers with no success in eliminating this problem: Catalyst 3.0, Catalyst 3.2, Catalyst 3.4, and also the custom Omega drivers for Radeon 9500/9700. I have also tried installing Catalyst 3.4 with an older version of ati2dvag.dll with no success.

Base setup is with the ATI Catalyst 3.4 drivers installed, latest motherboard BIOS (P4P800, v1007, released 06/02/03), DirectX 9.0A, and Windows SP 1 installed on Win XP Home. With this setup I have tried physically removing my sound card (SB Audigy Gamer) and net card from my computer (I am inclined to try removing my sound card again, and see what kind of crash occurs - perhaps the desktop and hard lock crashes are unrelated). The crash problems persisted. I have also tried reinstalling DirectX 9.0A several times to no effect (even using DirectX Eradicator), as well as modifying the video hardware acceleration rate. The lockups still persisted, although the time I had my hardware acceleration rate lowered, the game lasted for approx. 75 minutes before the inevitable crash. I also had a strange blinking cursor problem w/ the hardware acceleration rate lowered. Before I physically removed my sound card, I tried installing the beta SB Audigy drivers from tomshardware, which did not resolve the problem. I tried removing my Logitech mouse drivers to no effect. I even had two SATA drives configured to RAID 0 which I terminated (and had to reinstall all my programs!) thinking this might be the cause - which, of course, it was not. Nothing is overclocked.

My current setup (what may be relevant):

Intel P4 2.8GHz, 800MHz FSB
Asus P4P800 i865PE P4 mobo
2x Kingston KHX3200/512,512MB,DDR400,PC3200 (1024 MB total)
1x Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB SATA HDD (non-RAID atm)
Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer
LNEPCI2 netcard
Logitech MX300 Optical Mouse USB
SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-352B
Windows XP Home, with service pack 1 installed
DirectX 9.0A
Rise of Nations, with patch 1 installed

I have the latest ATI drivers, latest Creative drivers, latest motherboard bios, latest version of DirectX, and latest version of RoN installed. I have also tried the game with and without Logitech's mouse drivers.

The game worked on my second computer (which is now cannibalized) that featured the same video card (ATI Radeon 9700 Pro), w/ the same drivers installed (Catalyst 3.4). It was a P4 1.4ghz with an ASUS P4T MB, 640MB of memory, Sound Blaster Live! Value, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, Logitech opti-mouse, and a Maxtor IDE HDD running Windows XP Home. Shared relevant components were - mouse, video card, operating system (service pack 1, directX 9.0a), and net card (the LNEPCI2).

Is this a known issue that will be fixed in a patch shortly?

Thanks
