I've noticed people complaining about not being able to play Rise of Nations because of bugs, patch problems... etc.

So... here's what the community can do to help BHG solve these issues and get them fixed.

1. Give a brief description of the problem. For example:
Game doesn't patch.

2. Give a detailed system analysis of you computer specs. To make this easier for people to find out what they have, go here and download the Belarc Advisor at www.belarc.com/free_download.html and/or just browse through your Device Manager.
For example:
1.8MGz Intel Pentium 4 (Win XP Pro. SP1 build 2600)
Dell OptiPlex GX240 MB with BIOS A03 03/01/2002
512MB RAM
40GB Hard Drive with 21.85GB Free Space.
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4400 with driver 4.3.4.5 03/20/2003
(Optional) Cable Modem w/Firewall... etc.
Rise of Nations retail (English version) build 01.13.04.1801
No mods, no cracks, no trainers... etc.

3. Give a more detailed description of the problem. For example:
When updating the patch through GameSpy, it will download 100% then bring me back to desktop and patch RoN until it reaches 37%, then it will stop and give me an "Invalid Patch File Error" and a "Retcode positive - 32769". I have the English version of the game.

4. Give reproduction steps on how to make it happen again. For example:
1. Launch the game.
2. Go to Multiplayer Game.
3. Go to GameSpy Internet Matchmaking.
4. Click "OK" when it says to upgrade to version 01.14.05.0902.
5. When the download is complete, log into GameSpy with your password.
6. Observe the game going to desktop and stopping at 37% during the patch process.

5. If it's a multiplayer game, be sure to specify if it was through GameSpy Arcade, GameSpy Internal, or LAN/IP. Then list the settings for the Multiplayer game. For example:
Teams of 3
Great Lakes
Large (5/6 player)
No Cannon Time
Custom
End Age: Gunpowder Age
Elimination: Conquest
Victory: Conquest
Tournament Play enabled.
3 Humans vs. 3 Computers (Moderate, Moderate, and Tough)
Nations in the game were:
Aztecs, Mongols, Chinese, Chinese, Egyptians, and Russians.

6. If it's a single player Quick Battle game, list the same steps as in #5. If it's a Conquer the World Single Player Campaign... list:
1. What your Nation is.
2. What difficulty setting you have.
3. What Age it was in.
4. What country you were attacking, and what battle type it was.
5. What build you're in... and what build you started your Campaign in. For instance, the retail is 01.13.04.1801, and the patch is 01.14.05.0902. Did you start a campaign in the retail version and save the campaign... and then upgrade to the patch and load the campaign?

If you see your bug listed here already from someone else, just give your #2. Computer Specs.

Picolo,

Do you mean the FPS will move between 20 and 80? How much ram do you have? If the game hits up the hard drive that might happen.

Yay, patch 2 is out!!

As my computer was barely playable for the CTD's, I tried it out...and it seemed to alleviate the problem! I was able to play 2 straight games. However, the computer froze on an especially large game...whether RON or my computer is at fault, I do not know. But hooray, we can finally play the game!

Problem:
Egyptians get more wonders in games that don't last until the Information Age

Description:As the Egyptians in any normal quick setup game that ends in any age other than the Information Age, the Egyptians are allowed to build the wonders from one age past the final age allowed (e.g., in a game that lasts until the Gunpowder Age, the Egyptians and only the Egyptians can build wonders from the Enlightenment Age).

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Start a new game as the Egyptians and make sure the ending age is NOT the Information Age
  2. Reach the final age for the game
  3. Go to the Wonder buildings section
  4. Note that the Wonders from one age ahead are available
Expected Result:
I would expect the Egyptians to not be able to build the Wonders from the age after the ending age. They should still, obviously, get their bonus during the game (build Wonders one age earlier), they just shouldn't be able to build Wonders that no one else can build (other than other egyptians, of course ).

I had to bring this up as I played an online game a while ago in which our team won a Wonder victory as I was the only Egyptian player and was thus able to build two more Wonders than the opposition.

This problem probably will affect Wonder victory games most, but will always be somewhat of a problem in all games, as only the Egyptians can build those Wonders to get the benefits.

Today, I purchased Rise of Nations as it was the type of game which is in my interest. I was excited to play it and when I found that there was a MAJOR problem with crashing I was extremely disappointed. I have read on numerous message boards that report hundreds of people have had problems with crashing. My computer specs are listed below and any other information which may provide vital in finding a symptom. The problem is the game crashing forcing me to restart. I am entered into a blue screen where I get different errors, I think this is due to the current file the game is using as the file has been different nearly every time. One time it was nv4_display.dll and then it was w32k.sys. I have tried booting with minimal options enlisted on the Microsoft support service website where I had booted up with the least possible programs to run the game and the same problem occurred. I have altered my AGP memory to 256 on the bios and I have also altered the video performance slider on the display properties under troubleshooting. I have patched the game to the latest and have tried running the game unpatched, with the first patch and the latest patch and the same trouble occurs over and over. Usually happens within 5 minutes of game play every time. I am not running any cracks, trainers or any cheats or mods it is the original retail game full version and my computer meets the requirements by a long shot.

Computer freezes whenever I play a multiplayer of any kind. It doesnt freeze at any specific time in gameplay however it does freeze at some point during the game. I am not sure if it freezes in 1 on 1's but it has frozen on both 2v2 and 3v3. This did not happen before patch 2.

CtW still crashes even after patch 2. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled and applied the patch again, same thing. I choose conquer the world, pick a civ, a screen comes up saying loading and then ...crash!! My system exceeds all the requirements printed on the box. All my drivers and system files are up to date. Will this ever be taken care of? Without CtW this game is the same as other games I already owned. (Empire Earth, Age of Empires, etc.)

If I host a multiplayer game, after a short while, the game crashes to the desktop. I patiently awaited the new patch, hoping this would resolve the problem; however, it hasn't done a thing for me. If anything, now the game crashes occasionally even if I don't host.
This is a shame, because the game is a lot of fun, and I can usually host 8 player games without lagging or slowing down my computer, even if I have to add a computer player. (Just to note, the game still crashes with just a few players and no AI).

My computer:
ASUS P4S533 mobo
Pentium 4 2.53 GHz CPU
768 PC2700 RAM (Crucial & Samsung... exact same specs)
Windows XP Pro (with SP and all updates)
SB Live! 5.1 Sound (driver: 5.12.2.252 [7/24/02])
64 MB GeForce 3 Video Card (driver: 4.4.0.3 [5/2/03])
Roadrunner cable connection off a 3COM nic
All taskbar TSR programs are shut down prior to playing
Norton AntiVirus is disabled prior to playing
Zonealarm allows RON permission to act as server

How can I host a game, or play a game without crashing?

This game has been a great dissapointment to me. I have playdeed many many games in my time and this has to be the one with the most problems... its like the game is still in its beta or alpha stage there are so many bugs and so many patches which aren't fixing all the problems. I will wait for a few more days to see if any patch comes available or any cure comes along. I will be returning my game next week and get my money back if it isnt resolved.

NMA_FISHMANPET: I believe that I have read somewhere that the trial version does not include the sound files; hence, there will be no sound.

The game will freeze after a random amount of play time in MP. We are playing via direct ip connections in WAN. Custom teams and three players controlling a nation against two to three computer opponents.

This crash occurs on two systems, both with ATI Radeon video cards (8500 and 9500pro) and Sounblaster Live Value soundcards and AMD processors. One running Win2000pro and the other Win XP. The game will just freeze and it requires a hard boot. Ctrl-alt-del or alt-tab won't do anything.

We haven't tested if this occurs in SP as well. I think this crash bug has been reported earlier but here's my contribution to the long list complaints...

Well, I was determined to get this game working. I spent a great deal of time flashing my mobo bios, searching every manufacturer's website imagineable to make sure all my hardware had the most current drivers, and troubleshooted everything I could think of.
.
Turns out, for some odd reason, the Samsung PC2700 DIMM was incompatible with the Crucial PC2700 DIMM. Although both DIMMs had the same specs, and either one works fine by itself, the two don't mix well. I removed the Samsung memory (the smaller of the two), and although I am only left with 512 MB, the game (and my system too) works flawlessly. AND I CAN FINALLY HOST!!!
.
I guess the game's exception handling could have been a little better... but I can't blame the programmers for a hardware issue on my system. I am posting this just in case anybody else is using mixed memory modules, you might want to try removing one of them and see what happens. In addition, I found that the game runs poorly on a 256MB system.

By any chance, are you using ZoneAlarm, or another firewall? By my experience, once the game (actually, many 3D games) switches to full screen, you may not see the request for permission. Since the firewall freezes your system until you respond, you won't be able to ALT-TAB or CTRL-ALT-DEL.
.
To work around this, I usually:
1) Disable my firewall
2) Launch the game and connect to the internet
3) Minimize the game screen (ALT-TAB)
4) Re-Launch firewall
.
When the firewall launches, it'll detect the game accessing the internet and ask if I want to allow permission.
.
Also, it's worth noting that Windows XP has a built in firewall that seems to interfere with some multiplayer games. I find it best to disable the internal firewall and use my own.

Ok, I looked at the known issues text which states:
"No music in trial version of Rise of Nations: Music tracks are only available in the retail version of Rise of Nations."
.
I would imagine that game sounds should work (just not the background music). Anyway, what would a game be without any sound whatsoever? Sorry for that last post.
.
There's a link to a microsoft article of known sound issues that you might want to try: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;820091
.
If that doesn't help, then hopefully, someone from tech support can help you.

After applying patch 2 to a fresh installation of RoN, I now get a crash at the "starting game..." screen. The "starting game..." screen remains up forever. The mouse still moves, and the music plays, but I am unable to alt-tab out of the game, or control alt delete it's process. This crash happens about every third game I start. Note, this is single player. It hasn't happened multi-player yet, but I don't play MP that much. I did not have this crash prior to applying patch 2. I have tried un-installing, re-installing, and patching RoN several times; didn't help.

Specs:
RoN: version 01.14.06.0500
Compaq Presario 4400US, 1.3 ghz celeron, 512 meg RAM, BIOS version 686P9v1.11 (this is the latest BIOS for this machine)
Windows: XP Home, SP1, all updates, clean boot
PNY GeForce 4 Ti 4400, driver 6.14.10.4403

The only modification I have made to the game is in the Rise2.ini file. I disabled the start-up movies. Re-enabling them does not prevent the crash.

I'm back... a cople post ago I said that my problem with the CTW campaigns was fixed by uninstalling the gamespy software, well that worked for a while, I actually finished the entire CTW,but it automatically finished on me,ran out of turns. when I started it again, on a different difficulty and different nation, it started of conqured half the world then that blasted error came back! about the .EXE file, i can start new CTW missions but after a while it would give that error, I am asuming that there are still no patches availbel to fix this?

Well here goes...

I install RoN (clicked on Install and NOT Express Install) and everything goes fine. When I hit "Play Now", it shows the lovely RoN logo and then the EULA pops up and I click on "I agree", goes to a black screen and I hear for one second the intro. sound/music and then the game just hangs. I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to kill the game. This is with the CD in the computer. I've even tried un-installing/re-installing choosing the "Express Install" option and same thing no matter what.

My specs are as follows:

Toshiba Satellite 5105-S701 laptop.
Windows XP SP1 with ALL updates from Windows Update.
Have the latest video driver updates (which are the drivers that came with the laptop).
Have the latest Windows Media Player.

The real quirk is that a friend of mine has the same model laptop that I do and has a duplicate of my system (pretty much) runs the game just fine. We tried to get it to work, but to no avail. Please help!

EDIT: Well I set SkipIntroMovies to 1 and it works...something weird

To smd31:

Make sure you have the latest Windows XP updates. There is a specific XP update that is supposed to fix games crashing during intro movies. From what I've heard so far, this XP update does prevent RoN from crashing during the intro movies.

Edit: I see in your post that you have the latest updates... Might want to double-check ...
