I've noticed people complaining about not being able to play Rise of Nations because of bugs, patch problems... etc.

So... here's what the community can do to help BHG solve these issues and get them fixed.

1. Give a brief description of the problem. For example:
Game doesn't patch.

2. Give a detailed system analysis of you computer specs. To make this easier for people to find out what they have, go here and download the Belarc Advisor at www.belarc.com/free_download.html and/or just browse through your Device Manager.
For example:
1.8MGz Intel Pentium 4 (Win XP Pro. SP1 build 2600)
Dell OptiPlex GX240 MB with BIOS A03 03/01/2002
512MB RAM
40GB Hard Drive with 21.85GB Free Space.
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4400 with driver 4.3.4.5 03/20/2003
(Optional) Cable Modem w/Firewall... etc.
Rise of Nations retail (English version) build 01.13.04.1801
No mods, no cracks, no trainers... etc.

3. Give a more detailed description of the problem. For example:
When updating the patch through GameSpy, it will download 100% then bring me back to desktop and patch RoN until it reaches 37%, then it will stop and give me an "Invalid Patch File Error" and a "Retcode positive - 32769". I have the English version of the game.

4. Give reproduction steps on how to make it happen again. For example:
1. Launch the game.
2. Go to Multiplayer Game.
3. Go to GameSpy Internet Matchmaking.
4. Click "OK" when it says to upgrade to version 01.14.05.0902.
5. When the download is complete, log into GameSpy with your password.
6. Observe the game going to desktop and stopping at 37% during the patch process.

5. If it's a multiplayer game, be sure to specify if it was through GameSpy Arcade, GameSpy Internal, or LAN/IP. Then list the settings for the Multiplayer game. For example:
Teams of 3
Great Lakes
Large (5/6 player)
No Cannon Time
Custom
End Age: Gunpowder Age
Elimination: Conquest
Victory: Conquest
Tournament Play enabled.
3 Humans vs. 3 Computers (Moderate, Moderate, and Tough)
Nations in the game were:
Aztecs, Mongols, Chinese, Chinese, Egyptians, and Russians.

6. If it's a single player Quick Battle game, list the same steps as in #5. If it's a Conquer the World Single Player Campaign... list:
1. What your Nation is.
2. What difficulty setting you have.
3. What Age it was in.
4. What country you were attacking, and what battle type it was.
5. What build you're in... and what build you started your Campaign in. For instance, the retail is 01.13.04.1801, and the patch is 01.14.05.0902. Did you start a campaign in the retail version and save the campaign... and then upgrade to the patch and load the campaign?

If you see your bug listed here already from someone else, just give your #2. Computer Specs.

I changed my colors to 16bit and modified the rise2.ini like you suggested.

FullScreen=0
SkipIntroMovies=1
CPU_grade_override(A-F or AUTO)=F
GPU_grade_override(A-F or AUTO)=F
SoundEnabled=0

Still the game locks up in the tutorial mode and single player modes. I have not tried CTW yet.

Hi, I'm a newbie on this forum. I just bought RON retail version from EB a day ago, and almost everything in the game worked fine (I love the game). However, when I did quick battle with 1 or more opponents with custom options, I noticed that when the game starts, all other nations I'm squaring off against have the same building art as my nation. For example, when I chose the Chinese nation, and my other opponents were British, German, Spanish, Korean, Mongol, etc., even the British, German, and Spanish had oriental art type buildings, while Korea had Chinese/Japanese style buildings. The same applies for every nation. When I play as Turks, all my other AI opponents' building art will be Islamic. How come all the building arts are the same? How come the computer copies the building art of the nation I'm playing onto other nations?

Then, I also notice that when I reach the gunpowder age and am able to make cannons, the cannon units come out with European style costumes. For every nation I played, all the cannons have European soldiers instead of the soldiers of the nation I'm playing. And for the fort types, for every nation I play, I always get an Islamic type fort. How come this is so?

I uninstalled it and installed it again like 2 times already.

Is it because there are viruses on my computer? If so, what anti-virus program should I download? It's not likely my graphics card problem since it is an nVidia GeForce4 MX440-SE 64 MB card. Or did I just happen to unluckily buy a screwed copy of RON?

My computer:
AMD-K7(tm) Processor
548 MHz
128 MB of RAM
Windows XP
Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce 4 MX440-SE 64 MB card

Please help. Thanks.

You may want an upgrade:

548 MHz
128 MB of RAM

That's probably your problem.

As for your nVidia GeForce 4 MX440-SE 64 MB card:

NVIDIA GeForce: When using some GeForce drivers, you may experience significantly decreased game performance the first time the game is started after the computer has been restarted. If this occurs, exit the game by pressing ALT+F4, and then restart the game. After restarting once, the game should perform as usual until the next time the computer is restarted.

NVIDIA (GeForce 3, 4): When using these video boards, nuclear explosions may have a muted, grayish effect and boat reflections will not be present. To resolve this issue download and install the 43.45 version driver from http://www.nvidia.com .

Just be thankful your game runs!

Brodie00 and ravenfire_72:

I noticed you guys both have the graphics card listed below:

-Hercules 3D prophet 4500 (PowerVR Kyro 11): When the Rise of Nations is run with this video card at 32-bit resolution on a computer with a Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system, the mouse cursor will flicker during the game. To resolve this issue run Rise of Nations in 16-bit mode. To change from 32- to 16-bit mode select Options & Profiles on the Main Menu, select the Graphics tab, and then choose one of the 16-bit resolutions.

See if that helps any.

Yeah I noticed that too, but the exception error happens in any resolution. So it isn't that.

This post is partially directed at Lerris since the problem I am having is the same one. That is, any attempt to utilize the multiplayer game options results in :
"Unable to Establish Network Connection. make sure you are connected to the internet and try again."

I was curious if merely updating Windows solved the problem, and also which versions of Windows have the problem. I am running XP and do not have the problem. Another person also does not have the problem, but I don't know for sure which version of Windows he is running. However, person #3 has this problem, on Windows 98. The other difference is that he actually chose to install the GameSpy software when he installed RoN, whereas the two of us with working games did not.

Ahhhhhh!I am sooooooo mad right now!On Tuesday I rushed to bestbuy after school to buy RoN,but,my disk when inserted would spin and then sound as if it were being sawed in half or eaten by the tower. It would come out of the drive with scratches in ciruclar patterns on the clear plastic center. So,I returned that copy only to get another copy, and ya' know what?It did the same thing! It worked fine with CIV3PTW and buring CDs,what is the prob here?

My computer specs:
1.4ghz AMD ATHLON XP PROCESSOR 1600+
256MB SDRAM MEMORY
60GB ULTRA DMA HARD DRIVE
It is a HP Pavillon 521n with digital cable internet, hope that helps!

You must have me confused with someone else. I was not having any issues with the cursor either. RON would simply lock my system up or CTD then hard lock.

lol, i'm confused alright.

those of you with 128mb ram, I think it might be best to get at least 256mb or 512mb. prices are really cheap, and heck, you'll need more ram for any game these days.

The CTW mode does not work with my game. When I attack a territory (any civ) the game crashes and I can't reload the game because I keep getting exception errors (I have to restart).

My specs:

800 MHz processor
64 MB Nvidia TNT2 4xAGP
30 GB HD with 2 GB free
Cable modem with firewall
256 MB RAM

Same problem as Brodie and xark it appears, any ideas?

F18Fett: You may need to free up some hard drive space.

Make sure you have all the latest drivers as well.

New drivers? Hm, how do I go about getting those. The people at the STW website told me to try that out too for their game.

I get the same thing as Brodie00. I go to CTW and I can pick civ and place to attack, but halfway through it crashes giving me an error saying something about the folder /Rise of Nations/nations.exe

Specs: 192 MB of RAM
40 GB HD 21.2 GB free
Pentium 4 CPU 2.00GHz
OS - XP

I've probably got no useful info there but that's what I can find now.. I really want to try the CTW :'(

I bought RON, and it crashes all the time. Sometimes 7 minutes in the game sometimes 30 minutes in the game--but it always crashes. I have tried 2 different sound cards, different drivers for vid and sound cards. I have tested all my components and all have passed and are in working order. Only thing that failed was my vid card drivers-well 1 file wasnt registered "The file nv4_disp.dll is not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs. You may be able to get a signed driver from the manufacturer of the hardware device."

It crashed during single player and multiplayer games. I have 4 fans in my computer, 400 watt power supply, and it still crashes. Not sure what is going on here. If anyone can help me please offer advice before my 14 days runs out to return this game. This is the only game that doesnt work on my computer which was just custom built a little while ago.

Im using RON, .9020 patch. No mods, No alterations to files. Just game and patch.

specs:
This may be long--but you asked for detailed info, Ill copy my dxdiag save file here......

KRONOS1974: Install DirectX 9.0a and update your Windows components.

patton12345: Does it matter if you buy it online (Pre-ordered around March from Amazon)

No, it doesn't matter.

30 gb harddrive, partitioned with about 400 mbs free opn hte RoN partition (mine)

You definitely need more hard drive space. There's probably some conflicts going on there.

NVidia GeForce 256, 32 mb 4x AGP
-nVidia GeForce 256: When using this video card and playing Rise of Nations in 32-bit mode, the cursor may flash. To resolve this issue run Rise of Nations in 16-bit mode. To change from 32- to 16-bit mode select Options & Profiles on the Main Menu, select the Graphics tab, and then choose one of the 16-bit resolutions.

OG_Zeus: What graphics card do you have? You also might want a Windows Update and install DirectX 9.0a.

Thanks for replying.

But my computer is 48 MHz more than the requirements and my RAM is just right at 128 RAM. Shouldn't it already work right since it exceeds the requirements, even though not by a lot?

I tried out the scenario editor and when I picked Aztecs and started placing units on the map, again I got European cannons, not Meso-American cannons. Knowing this, I suspect maybe there's something wrong with the RON version I got. Is it something wrong with my computer or the game? I'm not sure. Do you think I should buy another copy of RON? In the Art subfolder of the Rise of Nations folder, I notice there are files with the Arab, Asian, and Meso-American bombard and cannon crews, but not images where you can open like with Quicktime or some other image viewer. Could the absence of such image lead to the game not being able to produce non-European cannon crews?

I downloaded the 44.03 version driver, and the game is still the same like before. Again, my opponents building arts is the same as the one I'm playing with, along with all the other problems I had mentioned. The only thing I noticed is a slight improvement on graphics.

Military Sage:

It's not the game version (all versions are the same besides language differences)... it's most likely your computer specs. Requirements will make the game run, but performance and graphics quality will not be as good as the suggested requirements. Depending on your graphics card, your pixelshaders are probably not supported, so your graphics won't have a crisp quality to it. If you have a friend that has a high-end computer, try installing it on his machine and see what it looks like... I'm sure you'll be able to see the difference. As far as tweaking it, you won't be able to change a lot for graphics quality.

I cant install drx 9 --i need drx8 for older software i use. Is there a way around it? Perhaps install drx9 and RON on my other hard drive? Maybe do a complete windows xp install, RON, drx 9, etc on hard drive d and still be able to use drx 8 on c?

KRONOS1974: You'll need a new partition with its own OS. There could be another way, but that's the only way I know how. Putting the game on another Hard Drive but on the same partition will just use the same registry and directx8.1 driver.

OG_Zeus: Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card and try using 16 bit graphics instead of 32 bit graphics.
