D. Known Issues

No music in trial version of Rise of Nations: Music tracks are only available in the retail version of Rise of Nations.

Games recorded in trial version of Rise of Nations cannot be played back in the retail version: While games may be recorded and viewed in the retail version, the playback becomes corrupted if viewed with a retail version of Rise of Nations.

Anti-virus software: Having anti-virus software enabled while playing Rise of Nations can significantly degrade game load times and performance.

Rise of Nations runs too slowly: You can increase the performance Rise of Nations by lowering the game’s graphic settings. To change the settings, select Options & Profiles from the Main Menu, click the Graphics Tab, and select the Low checkboxes next to individual graphic settings.

Limited Users overwrite profile files: Playing as a Windows-limited user (someone that does not have permission to write to the hard drive), does not prevent that user from saving to other user's profile folders and overwriting their files.

Game crashes cause subsequent games to lag: If a Rise of Nation game crashes or is terminated through the Task Manager, games played after this will slow down. To resolve this issue the user should reboot their computer before playing another game.

Hardware color cursor support and game resolution: If running Rise of Nations on systems without hardware color cursor support, you cannot change the bit-depth from the Graphics options panel within the game. To change the bit depth between 16- or 32-bit, exit the game and from the Start menu, select Settings, and then Control Panel. Double click on the Display icon and the click the Settings tab. Select either 32- or 16 bit color quality.

Replay of saved games may not function: If a Rise of Nations game is saved in the middle of a battle, and the player quits and subsequently tries to view a replay of that game, the replay function may not work. To avoid this issue, do not save games to be played back when battles are occurring.

E. DirectX Troubleshooting

Microsoft DirectX version 9.0 or later must be installed on your computer before you can play Rise of Nations. Rise of Nations Setup should install the correct version of DirectX on your computer.

If Setup does not detect DirectX properly, you can install DirectX manually by running Dxsetup.exe in the directx folder on the Rise of Nations CD.

If you experience sound or video problems using DirectX, go to http://support.microsoft.com/support/directx / for the latest troubleshooting information.

You should also check with your video or sound card manufacturer for the latest DirectX-compatible drivers.

F. Video Board Troubleshooting

Check with your video board manufacturer for the latest DirectX-compatible drivers. See “I. 3-D Card Drivers and Manufacturers” In this document for more information on video board manufacturers.

Some video drivers may cause the pointer to flicker: To solve this problem, right-click the Rise of Nations shortcut and click Properties or select Rise of Nations from the Start menu, right-click, and select Properties. In the Target box type -nohwcursor at the end of the existing text (e.g. \rise.exe” -nohwcursor). Click Apply and OK.

Creating a Merchant causes the game to crash: This problem may occur on the Diamond Viper V550 and Intel 845 chipsets. To resolve this problem, update to the latest drivers for your video board.

ATI Rage 128: When using video boards based on this chipset, buildings will be displayed with solid white textures. To resolve this problem, download and install the latest drivers from the manufacturer.

NVIDIA GeForce: When using some GeForce drivers, you may experience significantly decreased game performance the first time the game is started after the computer has been restarted. If this occurs, exit the game by pressing ALT+F4, and then restart the game. After restarting once, the game should perform as usual until the next time the computer is restarted.

NVIDIA (GeForce 3, 4): When using these video boards, nuclear explosions may have a muted, grayish effect and boat reflections will not be present. To resolve this issue download and install the 43.45 version driver from http://www.nvidia.com .

Intel 740, 810, and 815 Chipsets: Attempting to launch Rise of Nations on these chipsets results in a black screen followed by a crash to the desktop. There is no known solution.
SiS 315: Shore effects may appear blocky on game map. To resolve this problem, download and install the latest drivers for your specific video board.
ST KYRO: When using video boards based on this chipset, the graphics may be so corrupted that the game is unplayable. To resolve this problem, download and install the latest drivers from the manufacturer.

G. CD-ROM Drive Troubleshooting

Rise of Nations uses SafeDisc encryption technology. Some CD-ROM drives may not be compatible with this technology, as follows:

•Acer CD-624a: If you experience problems with this drive when using real-mode drivers, install protected-mode drivers.

•Cybermedia 204: You may experience problems with this drive. There are no known solutions.

•Liteon 4265: You may experience problems with this drive. There are no known solutions.

•Memorex CD-RW2224: You may experience problems with this drive. There are no known solutions.

•Sanyo CRD-256P: If you experience problems with this drive, do not attempt to run Rise of Nations more than once before restarting your computer. Also, try ejecting and reinserting the CD-ROM.

•Sony CDU77E 2X: If you experience problems with this drive, make sure it is configured as a master, and then run the game again.

•Yamaha 2216E, 4416SX and CDR6416S: If you experience problems with these drives, contact Yamaha for a firmware upgrade at http://www.yamahamultimedia.com /.

H. Audio Troubleshooting

Check with your sound board manufacturer for the latest DirectX-compatible drivers.

Following are the known audio issues and workarounds:

•Audio stops playing: If some parts of the in-game audio (including combat sounds) stop playing after the game has been running for a while, add the -sw3Dsound command-line option to the Rise of Nations shortcut. To do so, left-click the shortcut and click Properties, and then in the Target box type -sw3Dsound at the end of the existing text. Click Apply and OK.

•Audigy 2: Using an Audigy 2 sound board may interfere with SafeDisc, the encryption technology used to protect Rise of Nations. To resolve this issue, disable the Audigy 2 splash screen. Also, if you play a DVD, you must restart your computer before running Rise of Nations.

•Aureal Vortex: Rise of Nations audio may not function with Aureal sound cards. To resolve this issue, turn off the hardware acceleration. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then choose Control Panel. Double click Sounds and Audio Devices and select the Audio tab. Click the Advanced button in the Sound Playback section and then click the Performance tab. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None and click Apply.

•SoundBlaster Live!: Using this sound card when running Rise of Nations on a Windows XP operating system may degrade game performance. To resolve this issue, turn off the hardware acceleration for this sound card. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then choose Control Panel. Double click Sounds and Audio Devices and select the Audio tab. Click the Advanced button in the Sound Playback section and then click the Performance tab. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None and click Apply.

•SoundBlaster Live! Wave: Sound will only come from one speaker when using the 5.1.2535.0 driver. To resolve this issue download and install the latest drivers from http://www.soundblaster.com .

•Onboard sound: Some audio hardware included on motherboards is not currently supported.

•DirectX: If you experience audio problems using DirectX, connect to the DirectX Web site for the latest troubleshooting information, as explained in the “DirectX Troubleshooting” section preceding.

I had the initialization problem with the demo. I was able to fix this by emptying out the Windows Temp files.

For any that dont know how to do it heres how. Click on my computer, then C: and then Windows. Once in you will have to click on the show files. Find the folder named Temp. Open it and delete everything in there.

Help!!!!!!!!

I bought rise of nations a few days ago, played my first game, etc etc etc.
Everything went fine, when I downloaded the patch and started rise of nations again this happens:

I still get the smaller grey loading screen(with rise of nations logo) but after that the program minimizes and I can't maximize it anymore
(doesn't matter if I use autorun or desktop icon to start)
The demo always ran fine.

Anyone know what;s going on?

Just uninstalled and installed the game again and problem does occurs without the patch to.

[EDIT] fixed it.

I am having the reoccuring problem with the game crashing when I play. It is random, sometimes it's 7 min. into the game, sometimes as much as 30 min. The crashes are different too, sometimes just to desktop, sometime it locks up completely and I have to flip the power switch. I have tried all the fixes listed on this site, but none work. I have all the latest drivers for ALL my hardware. I think it may crash because of the onboard Realtek sound (I have an Abit KD7-RAID board) Does anyone think this is a valid hypothesis? Or know of any other reasons why it may be crashing? I don't understand because the game runs fine on one of my extras which has much less power than my main comp. Any help would be appreciated. BHG will fix this problem if it can be Im sure.

Main comp specs: (one RoN dosn't run on)

Mobo: Abit KD7-RAID
Chipset: VIA KT400
Sound: Onboard Realtek AC97

Memory: PC3200 (DDR 400) Mushkin 512mb
Proc: AMD XP 2100+ (1.7ghz)
Hddrv: 2 40 gig Maxtor ATA 133

Seconday comp specs: (one that runs RoN)

Mobo: D845HV
Sound: Avance AC97 Audio
Video: Geforce4 MX440
Memory: PC133 Samsung 256mb
Proc: Pentium4 1.5ghz
Hddrv: 40 gig Western Digital ATA 100

A quick way to test your sound theory: go into the rise2.ini file in your game folder, and set 'Sound Enabled' to 0 instead of 1. Please post if this works, and then perhaps see if updated audio drivers are available for the onboard sound (probably not since you stated you've tried that, but I have to say it just in case). If your audio is at fault, we might want you to send in some system info so we can try either an in-house repro or at bare minimum a note about it to the masses.

thanks,
Bryant

I've got the demo and I have no sound at all. I'm not going to buy a game that has no sound. I can play the audio files in the sound directory, but in game I have no sound.

I tried the turning the sound of in the rise2.ini file like you suggested. It just caused the game to lock up immediately at the start of the game. Sry

The GoodEvil,

I don't know if you are monitoring the other threads but Chris Coleman has said "Currently we are working on a potential fix for the CTW loading issue for patch 3..." I think you would save other gamers some unnecessary aggravation if you forthrightly added this "CTW loading issue" to this sticky list of known issues. This is clearly now a KNOWN ISSUE. If it isn't known to you please speak with Chris Coleman or Jeff Stuart (or just read the NUMEROUS! threads on the CTW issue).

I have a demo problem. I paused it once and had to go do something and it took way longer than expcected. A relative tried to get on the computer and exit the game, but it was locked up. The ctrl+alt+delete wouldn't even come up. Now i can't play the demo for fear of it locking up. How do i fix it?

I plan to live forever or die trying

May as well post my system specs up with everyone else who is suffering from the horrid random crashing problem. Does anyone else get their crash served with a high-pitched squealing noise? Just wondering. Anyway, my system:

WinXP Home | P4 2.4gHz | 1000MB RAM | Geforce 4 128 MB 2400 | Soundblaster Audigy OEM | Wireless Mouse

And, of course, here's what I've tried:

Using wired mouse
Installing patch
Reinstalling game
Turning hardware acceleration down
Turning hardware acceleration off
Clean restarting with no background progs running
Every conceivable combination of resolution/acceleration
Updating drivers for mobo, graphics, and sound cards
Reinstalling DirectX 9

Of course, I don't want to write Microsoft, as they will ignore everything I just wrote and reply after three days with a suggestion that I try turning down hardware acceleration. I love the game, and have even taken to playing it (with many, many saves) for five-30 minutes at a clip before a crash and restart. Needless to say, this is hardly what you would call, "immersive" or even, "satisfactory".

Does anyone have suggestions for next steps?

C'mon BHG, you NAILED it with this one, now let's figure out how to keep her running.

Before we start two things tro get off my chest:

Firstly - the title of this thread - justified by looking at the inumerable sites, that are around, for this game - all of which seem to have the same recurring themes when it comes to "Game Not Working" scenario. It's a long time since I have seen so much tech support banter on one subject.

Secondly - I apologise in advance for being very negative about this game and for the fact that I am probably going to "ruffle a few feathers" - but I am so fed up with this bloody game I am at the point where I feel like taking it out on my machine and throwing it out the window.

The Problem:

I have owned my copy of this game for two days now and in all of that time I have managed to play it for a maximum of 25 minutes without being thrown back to the desktop (even the tutorials don't let me get past the Henry VIII level without problems - never had tutorials in any game do that before).

The icing on the cake was when I tried it this morning and it loaded from the CD then promptly told me that it could not find the CD.

I appreciate that it is sometimes difficult for software companies to make games work on all machines - but - they are selling us the public a goods/service that we expect to work. If it was a faulty car or a PC you could sue under the Trades Decription Act (yes I am a Brit).

Before any one goes off half cocked at what I have typed here I think you should understand that I know that the "CD not found" message is the game and not the machine since I have had this problem in the past with other games and have had those games technical support overcome it.

I am adamant when I say that it is not the machine either, all ot the drivers I am using are the most up to date I can seem to get hold of.

To top it all the machine I am running manages to play, with no problems, two of the worst bug ridden games money can buy, namely World War III - Black Gold & Conflict Zone. For those that really known about these things you will have to concede to the argument that if I can run those games I should have no problem running this piece of crap.

BTW I have tried every one of the replies on this and other sites (spent a lot of time on line during the last two nights - all to no avail - even the 8.9Mb patch does not seem to have cured any of the problems). Minor problem here, the patch takes forever to download for those of us that are still afflicted with having to use a 56k connection (Oh how I wish BT would make my exchange ADSL compliant so that I could taste the wonders of broadband).

P.S. If any one suggests taking the CD back to the retailer for a refund I'll just laugh in your face for you obviously do not live in the United Kingdom - where it is almost damned impossible to get retailers to accept a return of software on the grounds that it does not work on your machine (Trading standards have left a litle loop hole that basically says - if you opened the software packging you no longer have the right to reject it - good old M$ use this tack if you ever try and go down the route of returning a copy of Windows for a refund. OK if you have a retail copy still in its shrink wrap - not if you have an OEM in an envelope. I know I have tried!!).

Just in case anyone is still having problems hosting a game over your LAN go to PortDetective.com and download the program(at the bottom of the page) install it and then run it after doing so go to Action> and add a new port #: 34987 this port is req. to be open to host a game if it is and you still can't then ya got other probs pal but if its blocked u need to call your ISP and have em open it should be all set in this cat. now if problems persist run the directX config tool by clicking on start> run> type dxdiag that'll do it for gettin it goin but next you have to click the network tab and click test direct play next do it again but this time your gonna have to join the existing directplay session but thats easy as long as you now what your IP address is if you can chat with yourself then directplay works if not then too bad caz i don't know how to fix that at the moment ok next possible problem is your directX version download 9.0b even if there is no problem the newer the better tell me if these thing don't fix any problems

i9 have been having this problem often... I played the game fine on my
PIII - 450
Dell Optiplex GX1
Nvidia PNY Verto PCI 32MB
256 100MHZ Ram
40 gig drive western digital
WinXP Pro
Daewoo Monitor
but as soon as i get another computer
Athlon K7 650 MHZ Slot A
Biostar MKE626B motherboard
640 MB 100MHZ RAM
Nvidia Geforce2 GTS 64MB AGP
same harddrive as in other machine
same version of windows XP PRO
same monitor

now it freezes during startup
i get the movies fine
get to the screen that says RON and my cursor changes
and then a little later on that same screen it freezes and i have to reboot

tried the force movie thing in an old thread about this, where you basically disable the movies... and it goes straight to a black screen and freezes

i have the newest drivers from nvidia, I tried upping to directx9.0b normal 9.0 from the cd, tried all new drivers for everything, tried older video drivers, clocked the temperature... 95 degrees whats odd is i know the guy before me who owned this computer and he played all kinds of games so... in fact he played the RON trial all the time

oh also tried with no win updates and all the updates, no service pack 1, and with service pack 1, in fact i've tried all kinds of combinations, rise updates etc.... it's eventually caused errors after awhile each time i'm trying to fix it and then i have to format and reinstall... this sucks, i've played alot of games, alot of buggy games, but NOTHING like this... and given the circumstances sigh

i was halfway into the game on a CTW mission... now?? notin'

update!!!

so i thought hmmm lets try somethin different
so i tested directx9.0 and on a test of direct3d it started the test first screen, rotating dx cube, spun around around... and then it froze, but i couldnt tell if uit had anything to do with my mouse... then i tried again no mouse moving, still it froze, updated to directx9.0b, and boom it froze, so it HAS to be direct3d or my videocard, which i doubt its my videocard... any suggestions? other of course than emailing direct x, to which i will get no response but thatrs okay

urville,

In what order are you installing your new drivers?

After 3 days, I have my cpu back up and running at a nice clip but I still get the unexpected crash everyonce in a while.

Anyways, for my upgraded drivers to work I had to upgrade like this:

MoBo
DirectX
Uninstall Video drivers
Clean up Regedit of video drivers
Clean up all left over files for video driver
Install new Video drivers
Install new SoundCard drivers
Install new mouse drivers
Install new modem drivers
Install new...wait that's all I've done so far

I also found a few different programs to help out in testing out cpu/case/mem temps and other information.
These two were especially helpfull:
SiSoft Sandra
Motherboard Monitor

Try installing in that order...or at least follow that order till the Sound drivers...after that who knows.

Good luck

I am experienceing the crashing/hanging problem that many others have had. I updated all my drivers, just installed the reg patch and went to win update (haven't rebooted yet)

Ok, rebooted and tried again. Now instead of the screen freezing and getting repeating stuttering sound, I get a black screen from which there is no escape (no ctrl-alt-del,etc...) have to reboot by reset button.

Running RON retail, no patches or mods.

Here's my system:
