The Seige of Hue

Author File Description
probed1969
File Details
Needs T&P?: Yes
As part of the Tet offensive in 1968 the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Viet Cong (VC) attacked the ancient imperial city of Hue (pronounced way), capturing the Citadel and holding it for almost a month. The Citadel is an ancient fortress built with immense stone walls and had stood for hundreds of years.

The Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN)was below 50% strength as it's soldiers were on leave celebrating the holidays with their families as is the custom. The NVA and VC used this to their advantage and attacked the city with a large force. They also attacked the Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) Headquarters as well as numerous other targets.

The ARVN responded but could not dislodge the dug in enemy troops. U.S Marines, later joined by elements of the 1st Cavalry and 101st Airborne divisions fought house by house for almost a month before defeating the offensive. In the process the ancient Citadel was turned into a pile of rubble.

In this scenario you are the local MACV commander. You must survive the initial attack, then with reinforcements take back the city of Hue.

Be warned, the enemy attacks with a huge force. It's not recommended to jump head first into the fight, but rather let your artillery and air assets do as much damage as possible before trying to retake the city and eliminate the resistance.

Good luck.

Included in the zip file are several photos of the Citadel today and one of the damage to the city at the time. Also included are 2 maps to help you get your bearings. There are also several building skins that were included in my Lang Vei scenario. If you want to use them copy and paste the fort and tower into your RoN art folder and the houses into your TaP art folder.

This is a good scenario, one of the best i've played.

Balance: 5
The numerous enemy troops might be overwhelming at first, but still, it's just enough to provide a challenge

Creativity: 5
This is a historical battle, so technically it isn't original...but you've worked hard for this so i think you deserve a 5

Map Design: 5
No comment...the score should be able to say everything

Story/Instructions: 5
The background info was well researched and provided a good read

Additional Comments:
this is my 1st review, so please bear with me. The way the enemy troops intially mow down your forces is overwhleming, but it's cleverly balanced so that you can drive them back with additional reinforcements. Plus, your starting troops were (in my opinion) well-placed so that you can counter almost everything. Anyway, a very good scenario!! Keep up the good work!!

The scenario was fairly straightforward (but extremely fun); wear down the NVA with your support and then finish them off.

Balance: 4
I took off a point here because it got much easier towards the end. The enemy didn't make more than two pushes towards the MACV Compound in my playthrough. Other than that, perfect. The initial rush of NVA was exhilarating, but not so overwhelming that all of one's forces are crushed in the blink of an eye. I also found myself relying heavily on air and artillery support (this helped add tension while waited for my aircraft to be refueled).

Creativity: 5
Great! There aren't that many Vietnam scenarios out there and this is one of the better ones.

Map Design: 5
Excellent. Not much else to say about it. The The custom textures are a nice touch, as well.

Story/Instructions: 4
Again, pretty straightforward. I took off a point here because I would have liked to see more messages as you take back the city.

Additional Comments:
Excellent map. Hopefully we'll see more 'Nam in the near future.
