Following an accident with the physics department's experimental new supercollider, Nachron University, the city of Nachron, and the nearby air-force and missile base were all transported to sixteenth century France, near the Spanish border. Most of their technology remained intact, including the Univertity's small nuclear reactor, which they reconfigured to power the city.
It has been five years since Nachron's arrival. Two nearby settlements have been established, which supply Nachron with raw materials such as lumber and ore for processing in the campus' workshops and labratories, New Chicago and Neo Bridgeport. Further expansion is on hold until more pipes, wires, cement culverts, and other materials necessary for constructing a modern city can be fabricated.
During the first two years, there had been very little contact with the locals - but apparently there had been enough for word to reach the Vatican that there was suddenly a large settlement of strange people where there had been none before. The Pope sent inquisitors. This was unfortunate, as modern sensibilities do not go well with sixteenth-century values. After the inquisitors walked in on a frat party, Nachron was labled not only an 'Enclafe of Sorferers Moft Vile' but a 'Breeding ground of Effery Earfly Sin'.
The Vatican spent the next three years organizing a crusade. Seeing as Nachron is in French territory, and France is in at war with England and distrustful of Prussia, only France and Spain are participating, but their armies have swelled with volunteers from the other Christian nations of Europe.
The backbone of Nachron's army consists of the regulars from the Air-Force Base, two wings of fighter jets, six of the most modern battle tanks, all led by an ex-Navy Seal Special-Forces commander known only as Lou. The rest of the city's military is armed with weapons constructed by the college's facilities, which vary widely in quality, but are getting better all the time as more effort goes into preparing for the coming invasion. All the requisite scientific knowledge is already available at the campus library, but actually putting the weapons together is a trial and error process, which inevitably wastes some resources.
There are also some helicopters from a commercial air-field which have been re-tooled for combat.
Naturally, the Nachronians have no nuclear weapons - all the nuclear material available is used in their reactor, and the missile base had no non-conventional warheads stored on-site. Were they to find some raw uranium ore to provide fresh fuel, however, the Univerity's physics department might be able to cobble something together...
UPDATE:
- YOU CAN NO LONGER CREATE MARINE UNITS OR SPECIAL FORCES.
Although Lou has trained a 'volunteer army' over the last few years to complement the soldiers from the base, without an actual military training facility turning a civilian into a real soldier takes a lot more time. Because of this, although heavy weapons specialists can be trained on short notice (they just need to be shown how to use and maintain their weapons) fast moving 'universal soldiers' such as Assault Marines or Special Forces units can't. If any such units are lost, they're lost. Period.
Learn to love your Citizens-At-Arms(partisans).
-YOU CAN NO LONGER UPRGRADE TO THE MAIN BATTLE TANK.
Although the college provides a great deal - machine shops, chemical processing facilities, agriculture, reasearch, etc. - it does not provide everything. Certain pieces of military equipment, specifically the more advanced armored units, require parts that can't be produced with the tools available. No more Main Battle Tank for you.
-I GOOFED!
The Spanish no longer have that virtually unkillable knight. He wasn't supposed to be in the initially uploaded version either. I'd thrown him in while I was playtesting just for the heck of it, but I forgot to remove him the first time.

It occurs to me that there are a couple of details, and some advice, that people might want to have:
-The Air Force regulars consist of three units each of Jaguar Infantry, Dragon AT Missiles, and Recoilless guns. Their tanks are four Leopards and two T-80's. Lou is an Elite Special Forces unit with greatly enhanced health and unlimited craft.
These units can't be replaced. There are analogous units in the Crusading armies, but greater in number to compensate for the difference in technological level.
-There is one uranium ore deposit on the map, but just finding it won't get you nukes. But if you do figure out how to get them, use them wisely. The enemy is ignorant of the long-term dangers of radiation and extremely quick to rebuild, so once you have the capacity, the temptation to turn Europe into a nuclear wasteland is immense.
Don't. [Edited on 08/01/06 @ 06:18 AM]

Playability: 5
This is perfect
Balance: 5
The balance is good since you compensate with better tech though those nuke would be of great use earlier :)
Creativity: 5
I love this time travel thing :)
Map Design: 5
Overall Great Map but a couple a more uranium mines would be better.
Story/Instructions: 5
great story with this supercollider thing hope the LHC won't do this :)
Additional Comments:
Great , Simple and Hard :) |
