International pressure from the United States had forced the Japanese empire into a predicament in 1940 where the continuation of peace was deemed unacceptable by the Japanese government. In response the Japanese military led a highly succesful invasion of US, British, Dutch and Australian territories in South East Asia. This campaign, labelled the "Southern Campaign" by the Japanese navy, saw the Japanese use revolutionary tactics involving aircraft carriers and amphibious landings with impressive results.
