I wanted to learn how to play a defensive game. You know, a really dramatic losing battle against impossible odds that would end in my ultimate defeat but still leave a massive battle for all to remember.
My three friends BSax, Elliott, and Napoleon, all were up for this. I promised them that no matter how badly they kicked my butt, I wouldn't surrender or resign. I'd go fighting till the bitter end in a "backs-to-the-wall", "slash-and-burn-retreat", "Stalingrad on the Volga", "Chancellor-in-the-bunker" type of scenario. Forts would be built. Towers would go up. Hordes of desperate Chinese soldiers under my command would scramble to the city outskirts to defend against their unstoppable Allied advance.
We started playing and - much to my surprise - I won.
...
BSax, Elliott, and Napoleon refuse to play against me now :( |

This game was played last year in summer, and looking back at this file it's clear we HAD NO CLUE WHAT WE WERE DOING.
None of us bothered to put fishermen in the ocean around the landmass. None of us scouted effectively. I built my Granaries and Lumber Mills way too early when my commerce was already at max cap. I had a negligible army and failed to upgrade it, and when the attacks came and I started upgrading, I failed to garrison the troops safely so they wouldn't get slaughtered by the first wave.
BSax, Elliott, and Napoleon were all less experienced players than me, having played for much less time, but they still managed to put together a couple of damned effective raids. Sadly, they didn't supply their invasion forces readily enough. It's worth noting that Napoleon attacked my city with no real opposition and had actually taken it, but then I managed to reinforce and retake it. Elliott also had a confidence failure - at one point with a fairly large army, he withdraws from my territory entirely after I sent a small skirmishing line of infantry against him.
With better coordination, Elliott and Napoleon could have taken two cities and I'd have been on the defensive for the rest of the game. It's possible they could have put informers in my buildings to show what my current force strength was like. I'm sure if only they knew how few units I had, they would have both pressed ahead, confident that even if I repulsed one, the other could win through.
Looking back, also, my extensive use of aircraft in defensive warfare was a bit cheap, and not entirely in keeping with the spirit of defensive warfare. Neither Elliott nor Napoleon sent aircraft against me in significant amounts, but if they did then maybe that would have justified my deployment of Fighters. As it was, my Fighters tore up pretty much every invading force they sent, after Modern.
BSax beat me to Supercollider, and if he had chosen to build an army at that point he probably could have put me in a world of hurt. Clearly he was the newest of all the players to the game, but he put up a good build game for a novice and managed to snag the most important Wonder.
The timing of capturing Elliott's capital and the coincidental simultaneous completion of World Government research was entirely unintentional and my comment to Elliott was made in surprise as I noticed it... moments before he was defeated. |

Ditto, and if Bsax had chosen AI as his ubertech after the collider was completed, he could have pushed you back and may have one, with a bit of coordination. I was watching his knowledge resource and he could have afforded it but he chose world gov instead.[Edited on 08/03/08 @ 03:00 AM]
