NOTE: This scenario was created without custom scripting, using the standard scenario editor included with the RON Thrones & Patriots Expansion game.
ABOUT THE SCENARIO: This is a semi-historical depiction of the Battle of Stalingrad in which you play the Germans. There are three major Russian centers you have to conquer inside the city--the 62nd Army Group headquarters, the Tank Factory, and the Stalingrad city center. All must be taken, plus any additional city centers build during the game, to achieve victory.
Both sides start with a lot of resources, but the Soviets start with more. Both sides start with full technologies available in the Modern Age, and that's it. The Germans start with more troops and of better quality, but have a lower population limit to start and have less resources. They also start with a strong air force against a city that has few AA guns. The German Army is sorted into battle groups with a powerful core element in the rear. The Soviets are scattered but hold powerful fortresses and isolated towers that can surprise your forces and stall your attack. Both sides start with citizens, who are the Army engineers. The Germans may need these engineers to at least build forts and towers, forward airbases and military bases, and a dock so they can cross the river.
The map is mostly one large city that is only partly explored. Informers reveal the locations of some buildings, including the three major city centers. However, the Russians can build new city centers. To win, the Germans must attack and hold all of the city centers. As you enter the city and more of the map is revealed in detail, you will notice you are in the middle of a large urban city partly in ruins.
The Soviets will harass your flanks with partisans and Cossacks, and start with a lot of infantry but no air force and only a few tanks and artillery pieces of inferior quality. However, they will ramp up quickly over time. I couldn't avoid nuclear weapons in the game, but I set up the German bases so that minimal damage would be done to them (but watch your University, it can be destroyed after a few hits). I simply ignored these attacks while playing. To keep it more historical, I would suggest that you as the German player ignore the nukes but use rockets instead. As the Germans, you approach the city and start making inroads towards one of three objectives, and it's almost all street fighting in very crowded, smoking ruins and rubble. This scatters your troops and makes it pretty hard going. I was surprised how fast my crack troops got chewed up on the streets. Be sure to reinforce your attacks as the Russians will probably cut off, surround and destroy isolated battle groups. Also be sure to establish flank guards.
If you are a diehard history buff you'll notice that the disposition of forces, city, etc. is only roughly historical. The city has its back to the river as in history, and that's where most of the Russian reinforcements come from. The Russians start somewhat weaker, allowing the Germans to probably, with moderate difficulty and a good fight, take one city center. If the Germans take the 62nd Army Group HQ, they will get the Terra Cotta Army Wonder (which represents a railroad station connected to the German lines) and therefore receive localized reinforcements. If they take the center, they will be pressured from the flanks as well as taking Soviet reinforcements crossing the river. If they take the Tank Factory, the strongest bastion will fall but they will have to watch out for the Soviets counterattacking from the center and right flank.
I like a hard scenario where natural difficulties of position and objectives makes up for the limitations of today's game AI. In this scenario, you will find yourself fighting in several places at once and trying to reinforce your axis of attack while guarding your flanks and "supply line." When you play this game, you will feel like the Soviets really hate your guts. Plus you'll see lots of buildings, smoking buildings, rubble and ruins, which adds visual interest, new obstacles and action as you see the city collapse around you.
I hope you enjoy this scenario. It was my first, so I hope I'm uploading it right and doing everything I'm supposed to do. I labeled the scenario v.1, so please give me constructive feedback and I'll see if I can improve it. I battle tested it several times and worked hard to get a good balance (after initial battle, Germans should be able to penetrate city and take one objective, then really feel the heat as the Russians ramp up their response). If anybody else really good with scripting wants to edit it and add more historical realism, feel free; simply say this is an update of the original v.1, and label yours v.2, etc.
TIP: If you want to see the entire city and also see how the Russians attack and defend Stalingrad, play a game against them, then view the playback, then click to view it from the Russian perspective.
Thanks for playing and I hope you have a good time. |

Playability: 4

Well, I shouldve given this a 3, I had a couple of problems when installing. Minor ones though. A newb wouldve gotten lost lol. Theres sometimes a little lag, but its no problem.
Balance: 4
(Insert Balance analysis here)
The balance was terrific, however sometimes when i move to attack I get overwhelmed by the soviets, and when i pull back to retreat they're already attacking my dock, or another city. But i beat it my second try, terrific job.
Creativity: 5

I was expecting some WW2 rip-off just like the others, but suprisingly, its one of a kind. The gaint city idea was great, however it did tend to lag a little when troops and planes are flying all over, but no biggy.
Map Design: 5

Like I said, the gaint city was a great idea.
Story/Instructions: 4
(Insert Story/Instructions analysis here)
The story is very intrigueing, but just like all the others. If you played a part as a general, and you had to save your hometown by the soviets, or something along those lines i wouldve given you a 5.
Additional Comments: I liked this map very much, im suprised its your first. Keep up the good work =)
