Rise of Napoleon ODA 1.0 (Tap) Mod
==================================
By: "One_Dead_Angel" aka "One_Dead_Villy" aka Ray Tang
Date: Jan 31, 2005
Acknowledgements
--------------------------
I would like to thank Big Huge Games for a great game and the resources basis
from which this mod is made.
Also I would like to thank Ensemble Studios for the building screenshots from
which I made some of the building textures I made for this Mod.
I would also like to thank Edilberto for helping with some historical research on the
Italian and Spanish Nations in this Mod, AoR_Blixt for some historical research for
the Danish Nation in this Mod.
Installation:
---------------------
You should put the files for this mod under a directory such as shown below:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations\
mods\Rise of Napoleon ODA 1.0 (TaP)
If you installed Rise of Nations in another directory, naturally you should have
a directory under the game directory called "mods". Under that you should have a
folder called "Rise of Napoleon ODA 1.0 (TaP)", with the mod files and directories
for this mod all under that.
Instructions (IMPORTANT):
-------------------------------------------
To enable this Mod, just pick the mod named "Rise of Napoleon ODA 1.0 (Tap)" from
the Mods drop down menu choice in your game settings screen.
This mod is Multiplayer compatible, so you should be able to play it on MP assuming
everyone has this mod installed. However, it is not recommended that you allow
autotransfer during online startup since this mod is almost 8 Megs compressed.
This mod is playable with all game modes, and nations. However it can ONLY be played in the Enlightenment Age, so you can to set the beginning and ending age to that. Age advancement research is disabled, so if you do not set the age properly, you will be stuck. The way this mod has been made, you will not have access to units outside of those in this mod for the most part. In order to pick the new nations in this mod, you choose what that nation is based on however. Once you have ran the mod, and havent exited the game, mousing over the original nation choices will
show up the modded nation names and powers in the pop up help.
Also just in case the title of the Mod wasn't clear. This mod is only for the
Rise of Nation Thrones & Patriots Expack.
Changes in this Mod:
---------------------------
This mod has a total of 123 objects (103 units, 8 buildings, 10 resources) are reskined
Plus 2 new model.

I am utterly disappointed with the lack of effort for both the Ottomans and the Egyptians (the Ottomans especially). What were you thinking when you gave the Ottomans an INDIAN character set? Asian I could understand, because Turks are indeed the cousins of Mongols, but Indian? Turks have nothing to do them in regards to culture or physical appearance.
The Ottomans are now worse than they already were (you took away what little good bonuses they had originally). Why does Poland get the "Lithuanian" Tatar when Tatar people themselves, ARE Turks, and their nation was part of the Ottoman Empire? And what's with all the camels in the Ottoman stables? Turks are not Arabs! The Ottomans used camels in their trade routes, not for battle, the Turks were always superb horseman (again the nomadic culture of the Turks and Mongols should come into mind). If the Ottomans do not recieve a Far Eastern, Middle Eastern, or preferably European unit set, they should be reskinned totally.
I hope in the next version of your mod you will have done more than simply move a few units around and change their names for these civs.
Despite my frustration with your stereotypes about Turks and All Muslims = Brown People With Turbans formula, I think you have otherwise done a superb job with the other nations, and the idea to make a mod entirely for the Englightenment era was genius as well. But seriously tell me if you plan to make another version... [Edited on 02/25/05 @ 01:02 PM]

The Lithuanians were part of Poland shortly before the Napoleonic era, and the ethnic Lithuanians were called "tartars" by the Europeans, it maybe a less then accurate name but netherless thats what they were called during that time.
http://www.antiquesatoz.com/napoleon/uniforms.htm
http://www.szlachta.org/2selim.htm
So I think you are automatically assuming what the term tartar means.
As for the Ottomans and Egyptians (especially in regards to the use of camels but maybe you forget that the Ottomans ruled over the various middle eastern territories that did use camels militarily), I suggest you do some historical research on them during the napoleonic era. To use the Asian art set for them would be totally wrong, I am not trying to portray them over the entirely of their history. Just during the Napoleonic wars. In fact (and to address their nation powers) the Ottomans and Egyptians were in fact pretty weak regimes during the Napoleonc era. Their previous reputations as horsemen were a shadow of their origins while individually good horsemen, as a military force they were no longer effective (in fact Napoleon was very critical of the Mameluke cavalry, , althought he praised the Mameluke infanty). Even the famous janissary corp of the Ottomans at that time was a disfunctional group , and the Ottoman rulers were busy trying to get rid of them (since all they were doing at that time was causing trouble with palace intrique). So if I had tried to be even more historically accurate. The Ottomans would be far less powerful.
As far as the units, using the middle eastern unit set is even worst. That essentually is the AFRICAN art set so that would be even worst making them look like Central Africans, nor is using the East Asian set a solution, I mean the Ottomans/Egyptian did not wear "rice paddy" hats and that would just look even wierder and during that time Ottomans and Egyptians DID NOT dress like Europeans, and indeed wore turbans and had darker complexion then the typical European. The originals had them using the European units art set, but from what Ive seen not a lot of people thought that was right. So the Indian unit art set is the best alternative. There is also a limited number of units art sets to pick from. (You can go ahead and change their skin complexion to be whiter, but I have no issue having dark skin myself) So It is not a stereotype on my part. Certainly no more of a stereotype then to assume all Europeans were white and all the women wore bonets. So despite the concentration of the theme of the mod to be a napoleonic europe mod, I thought to have everyone looked european would not only be boring, but also less accurate then the alternative given ALL the sources that showed they did not look like other Europeans of the time.

I can assure you everything I put in is as historically accurate as I could make it, and if you want I can site a source for each unit skin, so its not that I am trying to stereotype anyone. However, thanks for the comments anyways.

I would love to try this out but I am having some problems getting started. I followed the directions from the read me file, saved it to the mods file but on the game settings the drop down under game mods does not do anything. I have played RoN:TaP since it came out but am a rookie at downloading files so if anyone has any advice please let me know what I may be doing wrong. Thanks in advance. |

Did you put the mod files under the right directory. EXACTLY as shown in the 1st page of the comments. So under the "mods" folder you should have under that a folder called "Rise of Napoleon ODA 1.0 (TaP)" then under that all the folders and files it has in the mod?
ANY differences will make it NOT work. You have to have ALL directories where I mentioned exactly spelled the same, absolutely no difference.[Edited on 02/28/05 @ 07:32 PM]
