DESIGN: This scenario was designed using RON Thrones & Patrios scenario editor, with custom scripting and custom sounds.

SOUNDS: There are a number of sound files with this game, this is why the total zip file size is large. Keep the sounds in the same folder as the scenario, otherwise they won't play. They add a lot to the game so be sure you use them. Some of the sounds came from these sites:

SITUATION: Alexander the Great of Macedon has unified Greece and taken the fight to Persia, Greece's ancient enemy. After defeating the Persians at the battle of Granicus, at the gates of Asia Minor, Alexander has captured most of modern-day Turkey. Meanwhile, Darius III, the king of Persia, has joined his army to give them courage in the next battle, which takes place at Issus near the Mediterranean Sea. Alexander's goal is to personally confront Darius in battle and kill him, ending the war. Darius' goal is to crush Alexander in one blow and erase this humiliation to his mighty empire. Darius has gathered a significant number of Greek mercenaries for this battle, hoping their superior armor and Greek tactics will equal Alexander's.

You, Alexander, must win this battle or else you will lose everything you have gained in conquest. If you win, Persia will begin to topple.

SCENARIO: The game starts with your armies facing each other across a river. The river will be a major obstacle and killing zone. The Persians are strong in cavalry so be careful or they make break through your lines. Your objective is to wear down the Persian forces enough so that individual divisions break and run from the field, and that the total Persian army is worn down to a certain number, at which point the entire army will break.

GOODIES: There are several scripted "goodies" in this game:

* Try to get Alexander near Darius if you can. If that happens, Alexander will challenge Darius to personal combat between kings.

* Individual units have their own attack, movement and morale ratings. Your army in general has better armor and morale than the Persians, which you will need because they have numerical superiority. When each unit falls below a certain strength, it will break and flee the field. Some fighters may stay and keep fighting, however.

* Use your command and control tool bar on the leftside of the screen to control your army. You can advance left wing, advance center, and advance right wing to confront the enemy.

GLITCHES: Sometimes the scenario editor gets confused because the game is designed to recognize two types of regular infantry: light infantry and heavy infantry. When you add multiple unit types and try to control them, the game might get confused. This means that when you advance center, for example, sometimes not all of your units will advance. In other cases, some units are held back on purposes as reserves. So just be aware that when you tell a group to advance using the tool bar, you may have to follow up and move the rest of the troops where you want them.

STRATEGY: I recommend using the tool bar for big moves, and then using the mouse for fine-tuning your maneuvers and attack.

Tactics will make a difference in whether you win or lose this game. Tactics in this scenario is often about timing.

The game should last about 10-15 minutes.

You can attack left, center or right. If you don't attack, Darius will probably start to attack you, feeling he has the advantage. His cavalry is stronger. You have Parmenion on your left flank--use him to try to hold back the Persian onslaught. You can also reinforce your cavalry with infantry, as you have Greek mercenaries in the area.

If you break enemy cavalry, you can chase them and try to kill as many as you can, or you can recall your own horsemen to regroup and attack somewhere else.

The Persians are no push-over in this game; they almost won the actual battle. None of Alexander's victories were shoe-ins.

If you can get Alexander near Darius, Alexander will challenge him to a duel. That's all I can tell you about that for now--play and see!

THANKS FOR PLAYING: I hope you like this scenario. It uses a gaming system that evolved from Guilford Courthouse to the Battle of Cannae. Basically, it takes pretty much the same system as the Cannae scenario and stretches it for as large an army as possible.

Good division of troops. The only thing I have is that the troops are a little TO slow.

Meat Puppet, you are the men, this scenario proves it.. the way you innovate from scenario to scenario its amazing!! I had problems with the scripts, its not my strong anyway, but with your solutions i can work on some sets that i put apart!! Keep doing what you do best ;)

Thanks, KingWalker, I appreciate it! I had a hard time figuring how to do the same thing in the game, make a message or event happen only once when a condition in the game is reached (but keeps being reached continuously). But I finally cracked it. The solution is not very elegant, but it's simple and it works.

Walker, you're a good enough scenario designer you could take the code I created, modify the units similarly, and create some amazing epic field battles. I'd love to see what you come up with using this basic gaming system. If you use my code, just give me a quick line of credit, that's all I would ask--otherwise, borrow and steal whatever you need!

Emperor Phil I would like to apologize for the review I just submitted for this scenario. I have finally decided to devote some time to the scenarios I have played over the last few weeks and I have accidentally reviewed King Walker's "Alexander: Battle of Gaugamela."

Hopefully the administrator will strike the review and this comment from the board at his/her earliest convenience to avoid further confusion. Once again, I apologize for my mistake and will make all efforts to be sure it never happens again.
Galentv This map was pretty good, very good scripting: However there is on thing: Yu can make almost the entire enemy rout immiedately, only to find out that your army suddenly routs and you lose. I suggest you make a better rout system when it comes to the entire army, better than just "´Popolation below 170: Defeat".

However it is a pretty good map. It would be good without the river, () and make the units faster.

Besides the facts the units were too slow and I could always bring my routed units back into the fight(which is unrealistic) it was a really fun scenario.

Balance: 5
The sides were excellently balanced. The scenario was rather difficult for me, as I'm not an expert at controlling large armies. I finished it the second time I tried, but I had heavy losses(293 kills and 262 losses).

Creativity: 4
Great idea with morale, and also with the toolbar to control large formations(though I didn't use it too much). However, I've also seen exactly the same ideas in the Total War games, reason for which I can't give you more than a 4.

Map Design: 4
A really good map for this kind of scenario. Not particularly spectacular, but more than adequate for this battle.

Story/Instructions: 5
The story and the instructions were clear and well-written. Also I liked the popups which appeared when some enemy units were routed.

Additional Comments: This scenario is clearly better than most of the CTW scenarios included in the TaP expansion. I would recommend it to anyone.
