DESIGN: This scenario was designed using RON Thrones & Patrios scenario editor, with custom scripting and sounds.
This is a "field battle" type of scenario.
PRINT: Print these instructions since there is no readme.txt file. These are the scenario instructions. The rest is in-game instructions.
SOUNDS: There are sounds in this zip file, that's why it's a little big. Keep the sounds in the same folder as the scenario, so they play during the scenario. They add some goodies to the game so make sure you use them.
SITUATION: The Crusaders have taken Jerusalem and carved out a kingdom in the Holy Land after Muslim invasions made that region dangerous for Christians. Sal al Din, the great Muslim leader (leader of the "Saracens"), has failed in one invasion, and is ready for peace. However, provocations by the Crusader kingdom has resulted in a second invasion. In history, the Christians marched a long trek through the hot, dusty desert with no water, then the Saracens burned the dry fields all around them as they pitched camp for the night. The Saracens, outnumbering the Crusaders, slaughtered them.
King Guy was a worthless king, but nonetheless you're him in this scenario, and you must save your kingdom by defeat Sal al Din on a desert plain surrounded by three hills. The Saracens are deployed in a crescent facing your army, and hold the primary hill in front of you that bears the name "Horns of Hattin," named for the two mountains that spike up from the hill. Nearby are the towns of Turan and Hattin, held by a neutral player in the scenario.
VICTORY CONDITIONS: Reduce the Saracen army to a certain strength, and the entire army will break. Similarly, if you lose enough strength, your army will break and you will lose. In betwee, your army and the Saracen army is divided into division of soldiers. As each division falls below a certain strength, that division will break and flee to their camps. The Saracens have three camps, the Crusaders a temporary camp set up as a bunch of supply wagons guarded by militia--the "baggage" of the army.
GLITCH: When your knights flee, they may also drag your Templar knights (Royal Companion). This is a limitation of the scenario editor, since the Royal Companion and knight are part of the same "family" (heavy cavalry), the game sometimes thinks they are the same unit. The Templar knights should not be fleeing. Simply double click to select all of them, and then click stop or send them back to the battle. They will not rout after that.
GAME NOTE: When your units are fleeing, it is easy to send them back to the battle. However, they have lower attack ratings and will be less effective. I cannot set it up so they continually flee regardless of whether you send them back, or else the game will be considerably slower. If you want to play this scenario the way it's supposed to be played, when any of your troops flee, let them flee and try to win with what you have left. Otherwise you will achieve a hollow victory.
GOODIES: LIke other field battle scenarios I've created, you get a sound bar on the left side of the screen. Use that sound bar to control your army in large groups.
Other goodies:
9 - if you press 9, you hear King Guy declare his resolve to win the battle (Sean Connery from "First Knight").
7 - if you press 7, your knights will charge, temporarily (about 30 seconds) gaining higher attack ratings and speed. To accomplish this, I had to turn the knights into heavy knights for the duration so I could get the speed improvement. Note that you can only use this once--the knights cannot continually charge.
If you hit a command button and some troops don't move, either hit it again or use the mouse to move them.
TRUE CROSS; Another game goodie is the True Cross, a holy relic carried by the Crusaders, represented a trebuchet. Do not deploy the trebuchet, since it has a 0 attack rating.
NOTE that the Templars will not rout and will fight to the last man if you have the True Cross with the army. If you lose the True Cross, the Army will become "shaken" (lower attack ratings) and the Templars will rout normally when they reach a certain strength.
STRATEGY: Sal al Din will not attack until you do. He has the advantage of being on the defensive this game. However, he has been given more intelligence so he won't just sit there. This is what I've been working on lately, giving your computer opponent a broader intelligence so it can react to your attacks and launch its own.
I found that when I used certain strategies in this scenario, I won, and when I used others, I lost. So I think you'll find this scenario well balanced and a good challenge. I hope so anyway. It's funny how this works: I thought Issus was harder than India with my Alexander scenarios, and yet everybody's telling me that Issus was cake and India was a tough fight.
One tip is not to let your knights race too far ahead of the infantry. This is the mistake the Crusaders made and it cost them the battle and the Kingdom of Jerusalem to boot. You may also want to save your charge for the last second, so that you get the maximum benefit of the 30 seconds you get for the charge.
Other than that, play and see. Good luck and have fun!
THANKS FOR PLAYING: I hope you have fun playing this scenario and will come back and give it a good review. |

ok heres one for you i was thinking of other things this would work well for. How about the battle of waterloo this would fit the large field battle perfectly, also the english civil war might be fun, edge hill or nasby would be cool and heres one totally off the wall. try doing a navel engagment were all ships are devided into squadrons ypu could try doing the battle of jutland or the spanish armada. just some ideas, i would do them myself but i could never do it justice in the same way you could. |
