Dien Bien Phu

Author File Description
File Details
Needs T&P?: Yes
In 1954, the Vietminhs war against the French in Indochina came to a peak at Dien Bien Phu. Historicaly, the French army was defeated and the nation of Vietnam was formed. However, it will not be easy, the French have controlled Indochina since the 19th century, and are not going to give up easily.

Simply copy the files from the Dien Bien Phu folder and paste them into your rise of nations file.

This is my first scenario(I acctually made Salamanca first but I posted this before it) would you review it? I want to know if i'm on the right track
probed1969 Cool map. Not a very difficult scenario. The artillery and mortars firing from the hills was realistic.

One suggestion, why don't you put your files in a folder before zipping? Then all one has to do is put the folder in their scenario folder in RoN.

I want to try it a couple more times before rating it, but it's good for your first attempt.

Thanks alot probed1969 good idea about the folder, will try to do it for my next scenario
probed1969 Were you going for historical value or game play with this scenario?
File Author
Bit of both, I didn't really know too much about it but I tried to make it pretty faithful to what I did know
Tigger_Bounce i downloaded now to play i know u did a good job same thing i would have liked it easier to transfer the file
Map Design5.0
Playability: 3
(With the map revealed and the opposing units right next to each other there wasn't much to do. I think I only moved units 3 or 4 times.)

Balance: 4
(Balance was pretty good, though slightly favoring the Viet Minh.)

Creativity: 4
(The use of unit types is good.)

Map Design: 5
(Map is very good.)

Story/Instructions: 4
(No instructions given nor needed.)

Additional Comments: Not bad for an early attempt at a scenario. In actuality there were a number of strongpoints held by the French and the Viet Minh took them pretty much one or two at a time. If you learn to script you can do a lot more with this.

How do you get the cliffs that tall? I've tried all sorts of things and mine are puny. LOL

probed1969 Review on the way.

I also downloaded Salamanca to try. After playing this scenario I looked at Salamanca in the editor before playing and just as in Dien Bien Phu the opposing units are right on top of each other. So...I didn't play it and won't review it. Try putting some space between your opposing armies and don't always reveal the map. This gives the player more to do and adds some suspense.

This is a good start though. Keep up the good work.
marce61 Great terrain features, but you lack foilage, too easy to out flank the French.

Did you forget to put LOS back to normal after you tested the S, would have been real interesting if I couldn't see enemy positions; they were sitting ducks.

Unit selection excellent, positioning excellent, but, move the armies apart, instant engagement, doesn't make you think, and its not much of a battle if I can see defensive positions.

This historically was a major battle(loss for the French), ignored by our own government as a warning. Give the French some help, and make them fight to the end!

Don't destroy that map!!! Fix LOS, spread the units out! Maybe add some rice paddies. You got a winner here just needs alittle tweeking

Thanks marce61 & tiggerbounce. I put the LOS like that because 2 win you needed to kill all the frech and i didnt want people to be running around looking for them. i agree it was too easy though and now i have the basics of script i will prehaps make it so you don't need to kill all the french, just most. I will add some more units and put them furthur and fix the line of sight and try to fix it up
