This is my version of the battle in the Dien Bien Phu area of northwest Viet Nam between France and Vietnamese nationalists in 1954. In this battle the French were defeated and eventually lost their control of all of Indochina. The area was important because it served as a transportation corridor between Laos and China.
The Vietnamese used thousands of laborers to push, pull and drag artillery, ammunition and supplies into the hills surrounding the French positions. They shelled the French positions for days until they made an all out assault and overran their foe.
What would you have done if you were commanding the French forces in this fight? Can you beat back the assault?
In this Scenario the shelling has just ended and the ground attacks are beginning. Time is compressed from days to minutes. Hold off the assaults and go on the offensive to wipe out any remaining resistance.
Included in the download is a diagram of the general layout of the area. Because of the limited map size the area is compressed.
Thanks to all of you that have downloaded my other scenarios, especially to those that have left positive comments or reviews. I appreciate it and it helps when thinking about future scenarios.
This is actually the first scenario I did and it was attempted because of the inspiration of Meat Puppet, marce61 and crayfish. Many thanks to them for convincing me to get off my butt and do it.

Wow! Time flies when you're having fun. I didn't realize it was that long ago. But looking at the dates on your submissions it was about that time frame.
Guess I got distracted working on the zeppelin and some bunkers and huts and things and lost track of the time.
Mercy? From marce'? Yeah, OK. =) |

quite good- very hard though, i have played it once and got thrashed, will play it agian the leave a review. Theres a kind of feeling there isnt much you can do, as theres no way to train troops and you cant really move them about without a position being overun
ps. wasn't it you who said there were no tanks at DBP? |

Thanks crayfish. It's meant to be hard. It took me quite a while before I could beat it. One thing to consider is that in the actual battle, as the positions were overrun the survivors would pull back to a consolidated position. I emulated that with the one spawn.
Building troops...if only one side could do it, eventually you'd win by attrition. If both sides could, the game could last forever. The French lost their resupply by road first, then by air. They were stuck with what they had. The North Vietnamese had to drag their supplies overland by bicycle and old trucks. It wasn't easy for them either.
I think I said the North Vietnamese had no Tanks, I hope I did. The French had a few. I did discover that the North Vietnamese had the "Stalin's Organs" there, which I didn't know until I did more research on the battle. |

Playability: 5
(Pretty straight forward, popups informative, but, I thought the timing was a little off, they seem to appear when I'm trying to do something. I am pretty sure my scenarios have probably the same problem, it's tough to give the player information and anticipate everyone's skill level or tactics.)
Balance: 4
(Historically correct for the Battle, and not in your favor, can you say "RETREAT !!! " )
Creativity: 5
(Tough battle to re-create, but, I think you pull it off, unit selection was accurate and unit names were informative for this era. The VN assault was reality based which also made the game very challenging. Quite frankly the "ORGANS" were not playing my TUNE...LOL)
Map Design: 5
(Extremely accurate, the villages and terrain features blended well, but, if, I want to be a pain, my taste really doesn't like Tudor Homes in the Far East...I'm giving you a pass here...lol...because I do remember how long ago you started this scenario.)
Story/Instructions: 5
(Accurate and Informative, falls into the series nicely.)
Additional Comments: I wanted to find something here I didn't like because of the difficulty of the scenario (Not too fond of having to use "survival" and counter attack tactics), considering I had four units left at Victory, but, realistically, I can't, very good scenario, I need to play more. Another excellent installment to your Vietnam series.

Thanks for the review and comments marce.
I couldn't find any good pics to check out the architecture in the area. Some locales in Viet Nam were heavily influenced by French style. Those houses do look a little out of place there. That's probably why I started making skins for some of the buildings.
There's a fine line between not enough information and too many popups. In this one I wanted to make sure you knew where you were having problems. =P
In the real battle the outposts went down in a rough sequence and the survivors fell back as they did. I tried here to make it so that was your only option.
Glad you liked it. |

Playability: 5
(Unusually challenging with attacks coming in from many directions)
Balance: 5
(Fine)
Creativity: 5
(Very good)
Map Design: 5
(Intriguing!)
Story/Instructions: 5
(Very good)
Additional Comments: I found this an unusual scenario which keeps you on your toes and calls for good tactical awareness and ability to respond quickly and co-ordinate disparate forces. It took me half a dozen attempts to crack and that too was pleasing. Never a slogging match there's an excellent feel of being surrounded and having to battle with finite resources. Haven't come across anything where so much focus is required to succeed.
