The Battle of Hamburger Hill

Author File Description
File Details
Needs T&P?: Yes
In 1968, the US attempted to search for NVA troops on Hill 937, they expected only scant resistance but even with the American air and artillery support, the NVA put up a strong fight, although the US won, this battle made them rethink thier strategy in Vietnam.

Included are several skins that are quite importent to the level, the Vietnam marines, and several good building reskins courtesy of Probed1969. All the originals are included so you can switch back. Please leave a review so i know how to improve my work

probed1969 I've played it once. A couple of thoughts from that.

1. Where's the hill?
2. It was the 101st Airborne Division, not XXIV Corps.
3. Interesting map. (Don't want to give away any details just yet.)
4. Maybe rename the Assault Marines to US Infantry or something? There were no Marines there.
5. Good use of units on each side.

thanks probed, the research i found said it was the XXVI corps, i don't know why, as for the hill, it is virtually imposible to do a decent hill with ron. i'll wait to see if anyone else has any comments then i will probably update it
marce61 The Battle of Dong Ap Bia, May 11, 1969, Hill 937, Ap Bia Mountains, A Shau Valley

The Infantry units who assaulted the Hill were primary the 101st Airborne Division. My 1SG when I was assigned to the 82d Abn Div fought in this battle when he was a Private.

1st Bn/506th, 3 BDE, 101 Abn Div
1st Bn/187th, 3 BDE, 101st Abn Div
2nd Bn/501st, 3 BDE, 101
9th Marine Regiment
1st & 2nd ARVN Inf Div

28th North Vietnamese Regiment

When I was in the Army they where assigned to the XVIII Abn Corps. We need to track down what Corps the 101st was assigned to during this period.

probed1969 XXIV Corps was the designation given to the U.S. Army units assigned to the III MAF (Marine Amphibious Force) in I (eye) Corps in northern South Viet Nam. It had been previously called the "Provisional Corps". I Corp was the Marines AO, (area of operations) but there were Army units assigned to that are as well. XXIV Corps was all Army units under OP-Con (operational control) of the Marines. Not all of XXIV Corps participated in this battle.

The task force for operation "Apache Snow", an attack into the A Shau valley included U.S. Army, U.S. Marines and ARVN units. The 101st Abn Div is the unit that actually fought on the hill.

The hill is actually number 937 or Dong Ap Bia.

Understanding the command structure the U.S used in Viet Nam can sometimes be confusing. There were 4 main "corps" areas- I-IV from north to south, one or two "Field Force" commands, plus the "MAF" and all the divisions and smaller units that were assigned to these HQ's or operated under MACV (Military Assistance Command Vietnam) directly.

marce61 Oops, would be nice If I would of put the comments in the first thread.

This was a very good scenario. I played it pretty cautiously, so I need to play again before thinking of reviewing gameplay. Map and unit positioning was different, which really made the scenario fun. I can't place my finger on it, but, it worked real well. Great work.

wow, looks like i should have researched tthis one a bit more first lol.
thanks for the comments guys, glad you liked it marce. you kinda have to play it cautiously, as when i played it i found there are enemies in places that even i didn't expect them

Map Design4.0
Playability: 5
This played very well. The forces were all deployed in a good position at the start.

Balance: 5
Usually, just when I thought I was going to be overwhelmed with enemy forces, I got reinforcements. This may be too easy for some, but balance is hard to achieve.

Creativity: 4
As we discussed, if I'd made this it would've looked like Ia Drang but you made it your own.

Map Design: 4
Much better map design than some previous ones you've done. Good jungle atmosphere and places for the enemy to hide. The huts were cute too! ;)

Story/Instructions: 2
If you'd only been a little more thorough in your research this score would've been higher. It's best to check more than one source when reseaching historical events.

Additional Comments:
I liked it. It showed a nice improvement since your last submission. Keep up the good work.
