One of the more fascinating features about Rise of Nations is the inclusion of 31 unique resources. "Unique rare resources are scattered around a map randomly. You have to scout for them, and possibly even expand around borders towards them as you can only get the benefit from special resources that are in your territory. Once you've found them, you send a merchant unit to them and he sets up shop at the resource site. You will then get the benefit from that resource. Each resource offers something a little different, such as free resources, a tech line becomes cheaper for you, or a unit line becomes cheaper,etc. The bonuses are quite varied."
