Rise of Nations Re-Skinning Guide

Guide to GIMP

The GIMP buttons, from top left to right.
  1. Select rectangular area. This is so you can select an area, and only work in it. In order to save, you have to select the whole picture again. Just double click outside of the chosen area.
  2. Select elliptical area. This is like the Select rectangular area button, but it's for circles.
  3. Select hand-drawn regions. It's also like 1. and 2. but you draw out the area. Kind of tricky.
  4. Select continuous regions. Like the above, but if you click somewhere, it selects all the colors in like the one you clicked. Try it to see more clearly.
  5. Select regions using Bezier curves. I cannot tell you. I haven't figured that one out yet.
  6. Select shapes from image. You'll have to test that one out too, because I can't tell you.
  7. Move layers and selections. After selecting an area, you can move it about with this button. I don't know about layers.
  8. Zoom in and out. Just click and it zooms in. Really nifty. To zoom back out, not sure, but right click, select view, and zoom back out, or faster, select how far to zoom out.
  9. Crop or resize image. This one explains itself. You can crop the image or, resize.
  10. Rotation, scaling, shearing and perspective. Haven't messed with this one, but it doesn't sound to complicated.
  11. Flip the layer or selection. Not sure about layer, but you can flip an area you selected.
  12. Add text to image. Fairly self-explanatory. I've never had to add text though, so can't explain it in detail.
  13. Pick colors from image. Very nifty. Only thing I have against this button is that it doesn't instantly go back to the drawing tool after choosing the color, instead, you have to again choose the tool.
  14. Fill in color or pattern. Careful with this one. Sometimes, it fills in everything, so to be safe, select the area you want to fill, then use the tool.
  15. Fill with color gradient. Like the fill button, but the color slowly changes to white (It seems) Neat tool, but I haven't used it yet.
  16. Draw sharp pencil strokes. Most important tool. This allows you to draw. You can change the size, and color and everything.
  17. Paint fuzzy brush strokes. Larger and fuzzier than the pencil tool.
  18. Erase to back ground or transparency. On the TGA file, if your want some alpha channel, erase something, and the channel is underneath as the background. Be careful though, you may have to blend something over lightly or it'll be transparent. Not sure why.
  19. Airbrush with variable pressure. Like the spray tool in paint.
  20. Paint using patterns or image regions. Haven't used this one, so you're on your own for this button.
  21. Blur or sharpen. Like the blend tool, only it blurs, or sharpens, not sure how to get it to sharpen though.
  22. Draw in ink. Like the pencil tool. Not sure what the difference is.
  23. Dodge or bum. This makes something lighter, not quite so dark sort of. Nifty if something is too dark.
  24. Smudge. This is the blend tool. Just drag it back and forth between the colors you want to blend.
  25. Measure distances and angles. I suppose this is the see how many pixels and stuff is in an area. I haven't used it, but that's what I'm guessing.
Well, that's a general run-down of the buttons.
