Topic Subject: RON Future Expansion ideas

Hey all,

A history of past events found here and here, and a quick recap of recent events:

Age of Empires 2 HD (2013)
Age of Empires 2 HD The Forgotten (2013)
Age of Mythology Extended Edition (2014)
Rise of Nations Extended Edition (2014)
Age of Empires 2 HD The African Kingdoms (2015)
Age of Mythology New Expansion (201?)
New rts game by new Microsoft studio Decisive Games (201?)

Microsoft states that the new game will be the "next installment in a beloved strategy game franchise to the next generation of gamers" - might this be another "Age of", "Rise of" game?
Meanwhile BHG has been focusing on DomiNations (2015).

So as brought up here at HG and in the RON Steam forums there are ideas for a new expansion for Rise of Nations similar to Age of Empires 2 The Forgotten and now The African Kingdoms.

An expansion for Age of Mythology has also been revealed, so it looks like these rts games are getting more and more of a revival. This brings up the question if Rise of Nations and Rise of Legends will get new expansions as well.

There have already been many great mods which could be part of an unofficial or future official "Forgotten"-like expansion for RON. You can find mods here, here, here and here.
Discussion about mods here, here, here and here.

Skybox Labs and Forgotten Empires are the two teams that are working for Microsoft on these games, you can email them below with ideas, mod/expansion examples and support for Rise of Nations and Rise of Legends expansion:

Skybox Labs email
Forgotten Empires email
Steam RON Forum discussion

As both teams are busy working it's probably a good idea to write a short but informative email with links to examples of good work especially if you are a modder, designer, long time player, etc. Emailing them "Make RON2 please!!" probably won't really do anything I imagine.

Remember also that if Rise of Legends get a re-release then it can be modded to create a "Rise of Nations 2" or similar idea. Emailing your support for a ROL re-release and expansion may also help any RON2 projects.

I know this forum isn't buzzing with activity at the moment but what are your ideas and examples on this subject? Are there any mods that could deliver a similar expanded addition as The Forgotten for AOE2?

Yes, sadly I think the 2014 release is the last we'll ever see.

Bumping the thread, because there's evidence that RoN is being worked on.

https://steamdb.info/app/287450/history/

The SteamDB records above show frequent updates to three non-public developmental branches in the recent 20 days, and one of the branches is called "cheddar", which sounds like a codename for a new DLC. You can compare it with games they HAVEN'T been working on, like Age of Mythology EX.

Forgotten Empires also recently tweeted they "currently have no plans" for more AoE2 DLC. If they are not making a new AoE2 DLC, then they are most likely making something for another Microsoft RTS.

By the way, about this topic:
New rts game by new Microsoft studio Decisive Games

Microsoft states that the new game will be the "next installment in a beloved strategy game franchise to the next generation of gamers" - might this be another "Age of", "Rise of" game?
A NeoGAF poster called "element" seems to have insider knowledge on this project (due to its popularity as a source of video game news, NeoGAF moderators do try to verify the leaks and leakers on the forum). In April 2016 they said: 1) "Decisive Games is dead (didn't really exist in the first place)." 2) "The Decisive Games thing was a non-starter and was dissolved."

EDIT:
Also, has anyone made a backup of Ted Terranova's concept art pages? They really should be in the RONH gallery, especially when his old site is no longer available.

I can only find copies of the RoN2 concept renders.

Huh, thats hard to believe, not with so many Reserved units positions in the data.

Saw the updates, guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens...

There's plans for future AoE II expansions, I doubt MS has any for RoN at all.

@ atrican

Thanks for the info, there weren't much updates about Decisive Games so it's no surprise if it ends up being nothing.

I have a backup of Terranova's concept art for both RON and ROL, there are plans to revamp both HG sites but due to lack of time and/or resources this is a long term goal.

@ MrMew

So far in the "Microsoft RTS Series":

AOE2 HD + 3 XPs as of 2017
AOE3 (nothing added)
AOM EE + 1 XP (Chinese)
RON EE

Theoretically there is still:

AOE1 HD ---- Edit: AOE1 DE 2017
RON XP + patches
ROL EE + 1 XP (Kahan, Skald?)

AOE1 got a fan user patch here and there have been rumors of interest for a Steam re-release, Vugi made a RON patch here and there is a call for a ROL user patch project here.

Yeah AoE II is getting another Userpatch soon too (1.5), however from the current state of the game its somewhat clear that Microsoft doesn't really care too much, and that's the same impression people who have worked on or with the FE team get. Some people think that MS don't believe in classic RTS anymore and that the expansions for AoE II is basically for more revenue (hence the poor condition). At this point I don't see the FE team working on anything that isn't AoE II. There may very well be added expansions for RoN, its probably more viable for MS, but I doubt you'll see RoN 2 or AoE 4. I hope we might see those soon though, but remember that MS just launched Halowars 2, which is part of the juggernaut that is the Halo series. The focus would undoubtedly be there.

I feel that AoE I would be far better if it was remastered or some-such than just a re-release on steam, however it'd be interesting to see.

I've read similar things, as usual it's always about money and not enough community building and replay value with more modding options.

RON2 and AOE4 could also be modded into existing games as Total Conversion mods, there are a few TC mods for AOE3 that convert AOE1 and various AOE2 medieval civs into AOE3.
Similar projects exist for early Command & Conquer, Warcraft, Starcraft games and many other rts games.

0AD also includes some features RON has so maybe after it's done it can be modded also.
ROL recently got the ROL BIG Archiver program which now allows a possible RON Total Conversion mod, now we just need a user patch for ROL.

So I guess if there will be no more EE work done by the Skybox and FE teams, it'll be up to players, modders and programmers who are fans of both RON and ROL
to work on User Patches and similar projects because even if there is a chance of future official releases they will probably have issues and some people prefer to play the original disc versions anyway.

It looks like the rumors were true, AOE1 is getting a Definitive Edition this year.

Maybe the devs will focus on RON and ROL next as they are the last 2 games in the Microsft RTS Series that remain to be finished.

I'm more inclined to think that after AoEE is released they will focus on DLC for it.
